DWA 556 Constantly dropping connection
« on: July 07, 2010, 09:12:59 PM »

I recently purchased this network card and for the first week or so, it worked perfectly. However, this week, my connection has been constantly dropping at random times, and usually multiple times in a row. I did not have this problem prior to using this network card, but for reference, my router is a AT&T 2wire model.

Usually, this problem occurs while I am playing a game. What could be causing this problem?

Also, my signal is definitely not weak, I'm sitting at 90+% strength always, and I've also changed the channel to avoid interference from other networks.

I'll third this problem. Having the same issues. Ran fine for a month or two, then the same problem as the first two guys. It doesn't just happen when playing a game or surfing the net either. I just drops for no reason at all. Channel I'm on is clear, tweaked and reset all settings. Tried using Dlink's manager program and Win Zero Config. Tried using other adapters of other brand names and the same thing happens.

It has to be an OS/Software issue. I'm running XP Pro. Really need some advice on this.

for people having trouble with Win7 x64bit connection drops, try this out: This solved my connection drop issues.  (I still get one occasionally, but MAYBE once a week). This is a flaw with the Windows7 OS. So people still using WinXP, try this out, because this OS that had the same problem with this service also.

Try:
Start, Run, type services.msc, and find "computer browser" service, hit properties and disable it. Restart.

The you should have full signal, else your having other troubles with drivers or something else is wrong that may need attention.

Hope this helps.

Yes. Disabling the Computer Browser service 'should' fix the issue. You could also try removing the current driver being used, and download/redownload the newest driver and try reinstalling it. This sometimes also corrects issues like this. If it still exists, there may be a defect with the card itself, and you should contact tech support. May need to RMA the card.
