DIR-628 'no connectivity'
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:23:00 PM »

First off, I'm a pilot not a computer/IT type. I have read through this forum to get some ideas, and try to gather pertinent information for my situation.

I have a DIR-628 that's run great for 6 months now. It's been hooked up to my VOIP cable modem, and runs 24/7 unless we are out of town. My wife and I both have a laptop and our iPhones connected to the wireless network.

This morning when I booted my laptop, it wouldn't connect to the wireless. My iPhone was connected just fine. When connecting it would get stuck 'acquiring network address/waiting for network'. Never connected. The green connection light on the modem was flashing.  So I did the standard reset with the modem/router/computer.

Now the flashing green light turned into a flashing orange one. My laptop would connect to the network, but there was no connectivity. There was also no connectivity when hooked up to the router's LAN connections.

I then connected my laptop directly to the modem (as it is now) and that works just fine. Now I'm at a loss and not wanting to screw anything up by messing with settings I'm not familiar with. I did however run an ipconfig for when I'm hooked up to my modem, and to my router (via the LAN port)

Is my router taking a dump on me? Or is this something that can be fixed?

What happens when you reset this router, all the settings return to factory defaults.  It will not however automatically configure itself.  Therefore, whoever configured your router with your modem will have to come back and do it again.  This is the best possible answer.  I can help you but it takes time and I am not within your vicinity.  There is possibility for be errors.  Your Internet provider will only support your issues with the modem, not with your router.  But it won't hurt to ask, though.

To answer the  orange light issue, all that means is there's no connection to the internet. If you're up to the task, there's always the product manual.

Again, the best possible answer is to hire a professional, because there are LOTS of configurations. I don't want to mess things up for you.  I hope this helps.

...But if you're up to the task.
***I am not a professional and don't offer guarantees and/or warranty***

The steps you need to get it up and running:
1) Setup the Internet Settings(to get on the internet)
2) Set up the Network Connections(so you can setup the DHCP or auto IP setup)
3) Setup the Wireless Settings.

Here we go:

Step 1: Need to identify your ISP and your account with them
1a: login by typing 192.168.0.1, default ip router address.
1b: go to the setup tab
1c: select connection wizard, if you're savvy enough select manual
1d: follow the prompts, once you get to internet connection select which type of connection you have
1e: save the settings and reboot.  The router will prompt you.
**This setup ask you to authenticate your username and password**

Step 2: Setup your Network Settings/Lan (If you want to connect computers with internet cables) and IP addresses
2a: login the router, just click enter/login
2b: step 1b
2c: select network connection
2d: If you know what you like to change, do so, but I should keep it with the default values
2e: save the settings and reboot.  The router will prompt you.

Step 3: Setup your wireless settings (so you can use your wireless devices, i.e. laptop, ipad, etc.)
3a: login the router
3b: step 1b
3c: select wireless connection
3d: select manual wireless setup, need to customized to your liking
3e: enable wireless, select always
3f: Please change your SSID (wireless network name, i.e. Pilot Network, or whatever you want)
3g: Go to security part, select wep or wpa-personal (recommend wpa)
3h: leave everything in default except the Pre-Shared Key (it's your password) I recommend something that both you and your wife can remember
3i: save the settings and reboot.  The router will prompt you.

Whew!  If you are still with me you need to save these settings:
a:  once you login, go to tools
b: select system
c: click on save configurations, save it to your desktop and name it like, ROUTER CONFIGURATIONS, anything that you and your wife will remember.

After the router is configured, you will need to setup your wireless setting in windows or Mac.  You can find this out by Googling, "setup windows wireless settings" or something close to that.

I hope this helped :)
