DGL-4500 + TW Roadrunner + CODMW2 + 3 ps3 = HELP ?
« on: August 12, 2010, 06:50:07 AM »

Hey everyone.. I purchased this router last week after doing reviews and it seems this router is the best for a CODMW2 Ps3 party..

My Setup :

-Time Warner Roadrunner (Cable)
-Net gear Router
-DGL-4500
-(1) PC
-(3) Ps3

How its setup :

Per the DGL-4500 Instruction, I have the Ethernet Cable plugged into the back of the DGL-4500 Internet port, and the other end into the Netgear Router LAN port 1.

Internet work fine on it, but when i get on just 1 ps3 that is located in the bedroom and the DGL-4500 is in the living room Same floor, when i do internet test connection on the PS3 its only giving me a 1.5-2.5mbit down speed and 800k-1.4mbit Upload speed..  You can only imagine how difficult it is to get into any games in CODMW2.  When i do get in, sometimes i LAG big time.  Then when we have 3 PS3 connected, 1 ps3 is on ethernet, 2nd ps3 on wifi but directly near the router, and 3rd ps3 in the bedroom.  When this happens we keep having migrating host problems.

The main PS3 has NAT to : OPEN per the gaming rule.
the other PS3's are at moderate.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem ??

many thanks in advance. ???

Wireless, Not a friend of mine. I would suggest you go try to go Ethernet cable only, But if you can't no problem. I would also try to use this thread http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=13109.msg77307#msg77307 although It is a bit out dated, but a new and revamp one should release sometime in the future. Also add this although it ain't in the thread, that's because I don't want to update it any more than that. Once login the router 192.168.0.1 (Default Settings) Navigate to Advance > Firewall. Follow this image, It really helps in performance. I believe credits go to FurryNutz. Thanks man.

This may be for advanced users, If you can't understand sorry. Please note these settings are still being tested by me & haven't been tested by others. Use at your own risk.

Also what I have been doing lately is disabling Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) inside the ps3 settings. If you want you can do this and test how it goes. As for the steps I am not near my ps3 but I can try, Navigate to settings on your ps3 system > network settings > Internet connection settings > Setting method (Custom) > Choose how you desire to connect. Now continue untill you see UPnP and disable it.

After doing all these steps you should notice a performance gain. Any other issues just comment back here. If you guys would like to contribute settings that may increase performance you may do so, but I will have to first test them. Not all settings will be tested since they can overlap others.

I thought UPnP was suppose to be a good thing, why is it better without?

It is a good thing, But since we are adding custom rules such as our own ports and priority Etc. I think there is no need for Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) since we want it to have our rules not others. But this is up to you to decide what is better. I am still testing this method and others as we speak. I am always testing and tweaking but not all tweaks should be revealed to others, because depending on there network structures it might cause issues. I don't want to have to resolve those issues. I will update last post and let you guys Know I am still testing it.

thank you for the reply.  I will give the settings a try now.  I am also assuming, I should contact TW Roadrunner and have them replace the netgear router with just a standard Cable Modem that way it would be an actual direct hookup from the DGL-4500 to the cable modem.  I suspect the DGL-4500 hooked directly to the Netgear Cable Modem/Router is also a problem since its a router to a router, kind of defeats the purpose of the DGL-4500?? unless there is a way to set the NETGEAR just as a standlone Cable modem rather than act as a router as well?

anyhow thanks again, i will let you know how things goes. thanks.

Yes you are correct. My question is why would you have a router to router? It does defeats the purpose of the Dgl - 4500. I also for a fact believe that if you were to set the game fuel rules there will be a limitation, which limitation comes from the net gear. Can't you replace the net gear router yourself and in place of it put the Dgl- 4500? Why contact TW roadrunner to replace a router with a modem when you can replace the net gear router with the Dgl - 4500 router? Understand? As for making the net gear a standalone cable modem rather than to act as a router I will have to ask the man with the FurrtNutz or Tricky one of them should know how to do this. If you would like me to do so just let me know. Hopefully either one of them reads this and assists you with that. I do think I know how to make this possible but I will not comment on this, since my goal is to help and prevent issues not make more. Have a great day Coupee36. hopefully you can get your problems resolve. Once again any question or issues you may encounter just come back here we will try our best to assist you.

He needs to verify with his ISP that his cable modem has a internal router included or this netgear router is something extra and external. If either way, yes, its preferred to go from the ISP cable modem to the 4500. If the ISP cable modem has internal router, it's probably the same way as DSL modems, just have the ISP bridge the modem to the 4500. This turns off any internal routing function. This is a first if this is a cable modem with a router internal that I've heard. LOL. If anything, buy your own cable modem and don't pay the rental fee.

The only modem/router combo's Netgear make are ADSL. And since he has a Cable ISP, I don't think its a combo. Sounds like he just hooked up his new router to his old router. So maybe just try to hook the 4500 to your modem? Thats the one with the cable wire going into it.

Thats what I'm figuring. Need to get to basics here, Cable modem then 4500 then out to everything else.
