Hi Everyone,

Today I purchased the 12mbps internet plan from Comcast. I used to have AT&T at 1.5 mbps.
Instead of leasing their hardware, I have the following:
-   Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB5101
-   Router: D-Link DGL-4500

If I connect the modem directly to a laptop through Ethernet (CAT 5e), I get around 14mbps.
However, when the modem is connected to the router, my wireless speed is about 2.5 – 3.5 mbps.

When I had AT&T, I did not have these issues with the modem. I paid for a 1.5mbps speed & got the same through the router. The router settings are still the same since I moved to comcast, so there must be something wrong.

FYI – Comcast said that since I did not lease a router from them, they cannot help & just forward me to the d-link business support line.
D-Link tried a few things:
-   Lower the MTU
-   Change the Wan speed to Auto
-   Disable firewall

None of these helped. I am on firmware 1.5 and they want me to call back after updating the firmware. However, I’ve heard of too many issues with the new 2.0/2.1 firmware & as such, won’t be.

What could the issue be here? What do I do & try?

Regards and thanks in advance!

I would review the gameing and gamefuel sticky and possibly check the Firewall settings again. I'm also on Cable here and use these settings and works great. I currently use v1.15 on my home 4500. I have a 2nd 4500 that has v1.22NA firmware that also runs just as good. Let us know how it goes. Will try and figure it out with ya.

I have a friend that works at Comcast. I will ask around. Just off the top of my head, do you have advanced DNS on or off?

Also, did you use the router with ATT? If so, I would suggest resetting it back to default. DSL has alot of settings that can play havok of throughput.

HAHAHAHA...I was going to search DSLreports, but I guess you already posted over there hmm? ::grin:: Good call. But yea, there idea of going wired to the router is a good one. Narrows it down alot. Let us know.

What I recently discovered after buying the D-Link 4500 and not getting any better speed. Is that with ADSL modems, there is an internal router. The modem/router needs to be put in "bridge" mode, and then the D-Link put into PPPOE mode. Once I got that figured out, my speeds increased tremendously

Good thought on the modem, because although comcast doesn't use DSL in anyway they do have modems w/ integrated wireless, which I guess would then have to be a router if it can do multiple connections.  But he mentioned that he's using the Mot surfboard modem which I'm pretty sure isn't a router.

(btw, if you're in an area w/ DOCSIS 3.0 from comcast, you can get instantly more speed w/o upgrading your package by using the SB6120, it almost tripled my speed on the basic internet package)

Well..not exactly. It does allow you to make better use of the Powerboost feature, and does increase your max load, but your forced idle is still set by your modem's config file. What does that mean? Basically, it does(sometimes) increase performance, but not as much as the test lead you to believe.
