I want to add an External hard drive to my Router do I need to update my FIRMWARE
I'm using Firmware Version :  1.21

Is this just a plug and play, hard drive Automatic shows up on my network?

You need the install Shareport software and use Shareport enabled firmware. If I remember correctly 1.21 has this feature. There is a separate thread for Shareport on the forum with all the info you need.
