File sharing problem
« on: January 24, 2011, 11:51:50 AM »

I just replaced my Linksys router with a DIR-655 and can access the internet without any problems.

My problem is accessing files on the other computer on the network.  All are either Vista Home Premium or Vista Business computer.  I can see the other computers but when I try to access the previously established shared folders I'm unable to do so. I can however access them by using their IP address.

As an example, I have a backup program set to back up from a notebook to my desktop computer (named DESK). To do so I set the target with UNC \\DESK\dbup. It has always worked fine with the Linksys. Now I'm unable to access DESK unless I channge it to \\192.168....\dbup.

I noticed that Vista reports my network as NETWORK where it was NETWORK3 when I had the other router.

Tech support told me it was a computer problem and contact them that the router was fine.

Vista reports it can find the DESK but I should check the firewall setting to open TCP 445 (tech support said those ports are already open).

Can anyone give me an idea why I can't access the shared folder on DESK as before?

Thanks..

Enable Printers and File Sharing in your firewalls.

Try recreating the shared folders.  Remove the share from the folder and then reshare it.  Windows remembers the route it takes to get to a share by the MAC addresses of connections it travels.  Thats why you can get there with the IP name and not the machine name.

You can also try flushing your DNS cache and that might help too.

Hi davevt31,

You are exactly right. All folders being shared, must be unshared. And throw in a reboot before resharing the folders. It can't hurt.

Thank you all, but that didn't work.

I unshared/shared a couple folders off C:\ but that didn't make any difference. I made sure Everyone is in both permissions.

I created a new temporary folder off C:\ and shared it, but that didn't work either.

I've disabled the firewalls on both computers and that didn't work.

I've rebooted several times.

I've flushed DNS on both computers.

I've read somewhere else that deleted the network and re-creating from scratch may work. What do you think? If so, how do I do that?

I've also read that removing the wireless/network adapters in Control Panel and letting Vista reinstall may work. ??

I'm getting desperate.

Thanks again.....

Well, crossing fingers...

I may have found the problem.

I have Kaspersky Internet Suite and I found that under the firewall settings on the notebook it was showing as a public connections under the Networks tab.  By right clicking on it and selecting Local connection I can now access the shared folders on DESK as \\DESK.

I guess I should run some tests to see that I don't have open ports now.

Thanks for the input.

I was using a 655 with ubuntu for my home server.(wired) Also had win7(wired) and a macbook pro(wireless).
OK? Everybody could see each other and print.
So looking back...I didnt mess too much with that home sharing thing. I just right clicked on each drive that I was interested in (on the win7) chose sharing...advanced sharing....look at it...should be one more advanced sharing...you are looking for the box that has PERMISSIONS...aat this point its pretty intuitive. Assign permissions and at the top of the box should be something like EVERYONE. or else your name. CAn you print? I use CUPS and Samba for most of this stuff but if all yer machines are windoze it should be pretty  intuitive as I said. You really have to mess with it a little, but permissions is the key.
