I just bought the DNS-321 and have everything up and running ok. I was just wondering how or if I can defrag the HD's (set up as RAID 1, 2TB each) using Diskkeeper Professional.. which I've always used on my other hd's?

Nope, you can't defrag any network disk with such a product.

So, the hard drives are allowed to get fragmented over a period of time with no safeguards in place to keep them defragmented?

None that I'm aware of.  I know there's nothing in the DNS-321 to do a defrag.

Now I'm asking a question just because I don't know this answer but I recall hearing many many years ago that EXT2 formats didn't require defragmentation because the fragmentation that did exist did not impact performance.  I don't know where I read it but it seemed to be backed up by a few forums back in the day.  I don't know if this was fact or fiction but coming from a Windows background, it sounded more like fiction to me.

IMO, it's fiction.  If the access arm has to move the heads around more than necessary, it'll take more time.  Now, you can minimize fragmentation by intelligent management of allocating space for new files.

If you read this page on EXT3, they clearly recognize the possibly of fragmentation and the need for a defrag tool.  I can't imagine EXT2 being any different.
