Hard Drive LED Blinking at Initial Setup
« on: October 14, 2010, 07:34:29 PM »

Ok, this is frustrating.

Purchased the DNS-321 and 2 Seagate 1 TB drives (SEAGATE 7K ST31000528AS). I put the drives in before I started up the NAS for the first time. I start it up and the left side Hard Drive LED was constantly blinking Blue.

I thought it was wierd. The right side one stopped after a couple of minutes, why didnt the left one?

As a test I shut it off, unplugged, and swapped the drives. When I turned it on the blinking light had switched over to the other side. I started thinking - maybe its a bad drive...

Mind you - this is before I had tried anything (like logging into the NAS and configuring, etc).

Anyways, logged in - it only showed one drive and hence only gave me the option to do a standard config on it (I want to do RAID 1). I skipped the config and dug around in the settings/options/tools to see if I could find anything. No such luck. Firmware was already 1.03 but I downloaded that again and updated it anyways.

After about an hour of digging around I went ahead and did the standard config on the left drive. All the while the right drive is still blinking blue. After the config it gave me the option to configure the "New 2nd Drive". I thought this would be the solution to all my problems and I had been prematurely worried so went and ahead and tried doing that but got the following error:

Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure(Error Code:119).

Tried a couple of other things (resetting, resetting to factory settings, looking for status, drive test) but the NAS really wont show the 2nd drive, although it is blinking at varying speeds. I did shutdown again and pull both drives and they were both about equally hot.

Anyone had a similar problem?
Any idea what code 119 means?

Take the drive out and test it in a PC with the manufacturer diagnostics.  Since the blinking light followed the drive, I'm guessing it's really a bad drive.
