MKV stream prob dns-323 - wd tv hd live
« on: October 13, 2010, 02:12:05 AM »

Ive been running my NAS för at least a year, streaming .mkv movies to my WD HD TV live.
Made one change to the NAS a few days ago, installed the bittorent client.
Now i cant stream anymore, looks like the WD is loading for ages and nothing happens.
Running v 1.06 (i think).

More than likely, the issue is in the WD box, not the DNS323. Reboot the WD Live, ensure your firmware is up to date and consider running one of the Beta versions that resolves many mkv issues or wait for the public release.

Done that. Latest firmware, didnt have to upgrade, never had problems regarding .mkv, cant play mp3 aswell, but i can look at .jpg pix. Tried logging in with different accounts (admin to), no luck.  If i factory reset the NAS, will i loose the bittorent client and go back to earlier version?
Thinking of putting all data on an other NAS and reset the 323.

if you want to use bittorrent on your nas, use funplug and transmission. i have no problem with streaming 1080p content to wd tv live with 10 to 20 active torrents, some of them downloading at 1 to 1.5 mbit/s and uploading overall at 150-200 kbit/s (adsl). it just takes a while to start, that's all.

Actually, i dont want to use the client.
Just want to uninstall it, to see if thats the problem......to begin with. Or factory reset it, but will this make the client to disappear?
(And i dont use linux.)

My first thought was that somehow the client installation f***ed up my streaming possebilities.
Bougth another dns323 so i think ill move data and format the disks in the new nas.

Crap, lots of job for a small prob.  :(

well, anything you install on nas takes it's share of resources. bittorrent doesn't affect networking that much, but disk usage increases significantly, especially, when you download at high speed or need to verify local data for large download (10+ gigs). lots of work to do with disks at the same time = lots of time spent = something gets done at something else's expense.

bittorrent client can be removed using web interface, if i remeber correctly.

Read in other forums that removing directory BT and BT_prog would do the trick to remove BT.
Removed one but the other is locked to admin, and im logged in as admin.Cant remove it

Now i can ping the nas, if i try to map it (xp and search util) it ask for user and pass, tried every user on NAS including admin, no luck.
Tried ftp into it, no luck.
Tried pulling a disk putting it into a usb dock station, no luck.
Tried putting the disk into other PC as HD2 (sata) disk recognized but not viewable, does not attach as d:, but i can se it devicemanager (samsung). Looks like the hole disk is one big boot sector.
BUT i still can access it via webpage.

Strange....

You won't be able to read the contents of the drives in Windows without a Linux filesystem driver.

http://www.ext2fsd.com

It's likely that the folder(s) you are unable to remove are owned by the root account of the NAS so logging in as admin on Windows has no relevance.

You shouldn't need to be messing with these folders anyway- apparently the add-on can be removed through the web interface.

If you are having trouble with access to the NAS, consider a factory reset.

Made a factory reset, without the disks in it, and now i can access it with my PC:)
BUT i still cant stream to my WD, or....i tried one .mkv, worked fine. After that i cant stream anything.
Looks like the WD is kapputt. Tried update/reset no luck.

Combinations of probs i guess.

Thnx for all support guys.

WDTV Live has issues with MKV that uses header compression... and that means most of the newer MKVs out there...
It will freeze up the WDTV

WD Beta firmware v1.03.42 should resolve this...
