  Hi Gang:

I need some help, please. First some background: Running Win XP SP3, with ZoneAlarm v9.2.057, and AVG anti-virus v9.0.862. The DNS-321 is connected to my Netgear wireless router and has been working beautifully for about a year. As of yesterday, it's been sporadically dropping off the network -- most noticeably of course when I'm transferring files to/from the device.

During a file transfer, I see this error:
  "Cannot copy DSC_xxxxx: The specified network name is no longer available."


I immediately click on the mapped drive icon under My Computer, and I receive this (!) notice:
    "An error occurred while reconnecting X: to \\dlink-E5D581\\Volume_1
     Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use.
     This connection has not been restored."


Any ideas what is going on? Surely the DNS-321 isn't dying after only 12-13 months...

Couple of other things:

1. I am unable to access the device via a web browser,
2. The device is configured with a static IP address

Thought that might be important...

Well, the fact that you can't access it even using the IP address with a web browser tells me it's really having a problem. 

My first step here would be a factory reset and reconfiguration, that won't affect the data.

Well, I hit the reset button (on the back) and reconfigured everything.  It appeared to work great for about an hour. Now, it's dropping off the network again. 

As I sit here typing this note, I tried to reconnect for the 10th time in about 2-3 minutes -- and it's back online again... I'm trying to get files synchronized between the NAS (RAID1) and external/off-site storage. It's been about 6 months since I've done that -- yikes.

I guess I can try moving the ethernet cable to another port on the wireless router -- in case their is an intermittent issue with the switch on the router? I don't have another router to test.

You can configure the NAS with a static IP address, then configure your computer with a static IP address in the same subnet, and connect them directly.  I'd also try a different cable and a different port on the router first.

If all else fails, you can take one of the drives out and use something like Ext2IFS http://www.fs-driver.org/ to access the data connected directly to a computer SATA controller.

Have you had any luck figuring this out?  I just bought a brand new DNS-321.  It's doing the exact same thing - the SMB share stops working, and the web gui becomes unresponsive, but I can still ping it.  When this happens, I have to unplug the power cord to get it to shut down - the button on the front of the unit doesn't work.  This sounds like a software crash of some kind inside the box but I have not idea what it might be.  Note that I do not have any of the hacks people talk about installed, just the stock 1.03 firmware.

Have you reset it to factory defaults and manually reconfigured it?

I have not tried resetting to factory defaults - that's first on the list when I get home from work.

DNS 321

I am having the same issue.

I need some help, please. First some background: Running Windows Vista 64 Bit, 8 GB Ram, with Windows Firewall, and Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus. The DNS-321 (Hardware version = A2, Firmware version = 1.03 dated 08/17/2009, RAID = Volume_1: Standard, Volume_2: Standard) is connected to my D-Link DIR 655 wireless router and has been working beautifully for about a few years. A few weeks ago, it's been sporadically dropping off the network -- most noticeably of course when I'm transferring files to/from the device.

During a file transfer, I see this error:
  "Cannot copy DSC_xxxxx: The specified network name is no longer available."

I immediately click on the mapped drive icon under My Computer, and I receive this (!) notice:

Cycling the powering off and back on every item on network clears the problem.

To try to fix the problem I first upgraded my version of Windows to Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit - no change.  I then upgraded my version of Windows 7 to Ultimate - no change.  I then changed my router to a Cisco Valet Plus - no change.  I then changed all cables associated with the router and the DNS box- no change.  I then reformatted my hard drives (2 of WDC WD10EADS-00MM2B0) in the DNS box - no change.  I then reset the DNS box (reset button on back of the box) - no change. I then open the front cover of the DNS box a little bit to try to increase the air flow - no change.

I get the same results with Windows Backup, Acronis True Image Home 2011, GoodSync, and SyncToy 2.1 (x64).

I was experiencing the same issue. The NAS would randomly drop off the network and the web interface would not respond either. To bring it back online I would have to unplug the power cord and then it would only stay online for a matter of minutes.

I reset to factory defaults and the NAS has been online for a good 24 hour period. I did not make any recent changes to the NAS settings so it just randomly started happening. I had the unit for about a year.

Hopefully restoring to defaults will solve other people's issues as well.

mine had this symptom right when i got it. And the after i called tech support, we tried a few things and it started working.  Problem solved.....no. just today it started doing the same thing... Almost a year later... Now this stupid thing is off warranty.   I tried backing up my settings then doing a factory reset then re loading in my settings and its doing the same thing.  how on earth can i get this thing up and running again??

Its a royal PITA because its downstairs and everytime it locks up i have to go downstairs and un plug it to reset it. Only for it to freeze up again very shortly

What did you do a year ago that made it work?
There's a school of thought that says configure the box manually rather than restore a config file that may contain your issue.

Checked network cable, ports, connectivity?

Grab a copy of any of the Linux live cd's - Ubuntu is reasonable, Puppy Linux is small and fast.  Burn to a CD and run from CD.  (Google and download the ISO, burn with ImgBurn etc to CD as a disc image, reboot with CD first in boot list).

It should autoconfigure your network settings - Ubuntu will find most adapters and Windows shares, Puppy works fine with mine.

Now try to access the DNS-321 from the network.  If it finds it fine and stays connected it is a Windows 7/Vista problem (which, unfortunately, is not uncommon with mapped drives - XP was much more reliable).
