Router Issues
« on: December 02, 2010, 04:11:09 PM »

First off I just want to say I am not the most informed individual when it comes to wireless setups.  I recently bought the DGL-4500 because I have been having problems with lag issues with my computer gaming and my xbox.  I recently used the sticky to enhance my performance for my xbox, which I believe is running pretty well.  I haven't had any issues with it.  Now I still have to problems:
1. My speed for my internet caps out at 54 Mbps.  I don't know if I am able to get that any higher.  While browsing the internet the speed seems good, but I think it can be better.
2. This is my main issue.  I play a game called Heroes of Newerth.  This is the only game I play on my computer at least until Diablo 3 comes out.  I was wondering what/if I can do to enhance my performance in this game, like I did with the xbox 360.  Please help me out asap. I truly appreciate anything anyone can help me with.  Thank you

Good you cam to the forum and welcome. I hope we can be of help.

1. If your internet caps out at 54Mb then you could be hitting the maximum speed connection with your ISP. What internet package do you pay for from your ISP? What internet service do you have, i.e. DSL or cable? I buy a 10Mb with 1Mb up from my Cable provider and thats what I get. Specially now that they support DOCSIS 3.0 and I was able to get the Motorola SB6120 modem. It's fast enough for what I need. Your doing well at 54Mb if thats what your paying for?

2. If your playing a game on the PC, then I would advise you to go to the game mfr web site and see what ports they recommend opening and adding that to the Gaming section in the router. You can also add a gamefuel rule like you did with the xbox if you want to prioritize the traffic going to each if you game on the pc and the xbox at the same time. I've never done this however I have 2 xboxes and they work well with gamefuel setup. I do play Diablo and Halo 2 for PC however I've only added them to the gaming section so not really any need for them to be in gamefuel as I'm the only one in the house that games so it's either PC or xbox while online.

I have played xbox well with roommate working from home in his office and connected to the internet. All PCs just have a static IP along with the xboxes. The xboxes are in gamefuel. My PC is in gaming for XBL. Let us know how it goes.

My PC gaming is good to go. I thank you for your response.  I now have a different problem.  I accidentally hit the disconnect button while in my network settings.  I then scanned for wireless devices and it can't find anything.  I am so confused right now and have no clue what to do.  Please help me out thanks.

check your wireless settings on he router.  Go to Basic>Wireless.  Make sure your 802.11 mode is set to one supported by your wireless client and make sure the visibility status is set to visible.  Also make sure your wireless Network Name  field is populated.

Jr,

Thank you so much for your reply.  Like I said in an earlier post I don't have the highest knowledge when it comes to wireless networking, and something as easy as that confused the hell out of me.  I don't even know how it would be invisible instead of visible.

But my next question is when it comes to the 802.11 what should I put this setting on.  Before I changed it it was on mixed n,g,and b should I just put it on that or have a specific one, and whats the difference.  Thanks

Give G mode only and use 2.4Ghz band. G mode is a 54Mb connection for most current devices. If you have any devices that use N, you can try G and N at 2.4Ghz. However I would take steps and try G mode only 1st at 2.4Ghz, you could leave the password security set to open or don't enter a password for testing. Once you get the wireless going, go back in then set up a password security using WPA/WAPA2 settings. Hope this helps. Let us know.

OK everything worked wonderful for a week.  My parents call me while I'm at school and tell me that the internet upstairs (hardwired) is not working.  I tell them to power cycle they do and it works good for them. I come home and my internet works on my computer.  I try to get on my xbox and it doesnt work.  It finds my wireless router and it gives me 4 bars.  I test my connection and it tells me "Your DNS server can't resolve Xbox LIVE server names"  I did all 4 steps from xbox live/networkhelp
1. Reset network settings to the defaults
2. Restart your network equipment
3. Use manual DNS settings
4. Try a modem connection (when i do this it works)

I'm totally lost.  Since we didn't do anything besides power cycle.  I don't know what to do. Thanks for any help you can give me.

You you reviewed the gaming and gamefuel - Xbox Live sticky? If manual is working sounds like the router isn't configured correctly. Enable DNS Relay should be checked and enabled.

Make sure that Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled in in the Basic/Internet/Manual section. You can find these IP addresses under Status/Wan section. Sometimes they don't get auto filled in. They should be.
