Reading a disc tha been taken out of the DNS-323
« on: June 26, 2008, 11:45:22 AM »

Hi, just bought the DNS-323 and I have so far been happy with it. But my question is following: I've used one of the HD's in the DNS-323 as a disk for copying my workfiles and videos to it, then I took the drive out ot the DNS-323 and took it with me to work where I tried to connect it to my Promise SATA card. But it couldn't assig a drive letter to the disc. I looked in "Disk Management" in "Computer Managemnet" on my XP system and there's is a disc. It has three healthy partitions, byt they are unknowned to the system... is there a workaround for this or do I have to carry the big box with me each time I will want to read the disc's? Or what happens if the DNS-323 beraks, how will I be able to retrieve my information from the discs?

The drives in the DNS-323 are formated in the EXT2 file system. You will need a Linux machine to mount the drives and read the data. Windows Does not support this system by default. However there are addons for Windows that may allow windows to read the EXT2 and EXT3 file system.

Try the WinXP driver from here: http://www.fs-driver.org/
It should allow you to read the disk.
