DGL-4500 repeatedly loses WAN access
« on: June 17, 2008, 08:36:52 AM »

Just recently upgraded my home network from a Linksys BEFSX41 and a Linksys 802.11b WAP in order to hook up some wireless-g security cams. I opted to go for the DGL-4500 as I do a lot of gaming in the evenings and it fit the bill as far as the camera requirements. Here's the problem:

After a while, I'm guessing 4-6 hours, wired computers on my network lose WAN access. I can still access devices on the LAN such as the cameras, printer, router functions, etc. but I can no longer get on the web or FTP. The only way I've found to regain access is by restarting the computer. Very frustrating, especially for my wife who has an auto-bid program for Ebay that can't work without web access, that computer stays on pretty much 24/7.  I've had the DGL-4500 for just under a week.

All devices normally connected to the network are assigned a DHCP reserved number (permanent IP addy) on the router, I'm running XP pro on all computers. There are 2 wireless Linksys network cameras on the system, a network printer and also the occasional wireless laptop. The router has the latest firmware 1.02.  Everything is set to the "least restrictive" setting that I can reasonably guess at, no firewall, most direct NAT, etc...  Using the router's release/renew or doing ipconfig /release and renew on the wired PC has no effect on reconnecting to the WAN.

At first I thought the security cams were overloading the system, they save files to the monitoring software and online via FTP and can hog some bandwidth, but that doesn't seem to be the case... I think it has to do with the certificate lease time, but I can't figure out how to reset the lease or why the lease isn't renewing properly for the devices with fixed IPs; the wireless cameras stay connected just fine and are able to continue FTP over the network to the online storage even when the wired computers can't connect at all. AFAIK the device and computers shouldn't need to be messed with as far as leases go... They should automatically renew without needing a restart.

Help would be appreciated; I don't want to have to return this router, but staying connected is very important to my wife's Ebay business.

No replies?  No problem...  Issue is fixed.

My DGL-4500 was losing internet access and dropping the internet connection due to ZoneAlarm.  Yep, ZoneAlarm was set to allow my old router's DHCP server IP 192.168.1.1, the new DLink router's DHCP is 192.168.0.1.  So, Zonealarm was blocking it.  Anyone else encountering a problem with computers on the network losing internet access and running a firewall might want to look at that.  For Zonealarm, go to: Firewall <left side>, click the "Zones" tab, and at the bottom right select "add" and enter the information for your router's DHCP IP.
