DND-323 Permissions
« on: January 17, 2011, 11:37:56 AM »

HELP!!!  I recently upgraded my D-Link to twin 2.0 TB drives and restored all of my files to the unit over the weekend.  I've owned the unit for probably close to three years, and just can't remember how I set up the permissions before.

I basically have two directories where everything is kept:  'Public Shares' and 'Protected Files'.  Essentially, I need for 'Public Shares' to be accessible by anyone in the network--no passwords, etc.  However, 'Protected Files' is something that does need to be password protected.

Right now, I have both of the above directories under "Volume 1".  There is no "Volume 2" (I have seen people referring to this through searches).  Anyway, I have tried everything.... leaving Volume 1 open to everyone yet assigning users to 'Protected Files'.  I've given permissions for both 'Public Shares' and 'Protected Files' while deleting the default Volume 1 share.... still doesn't work.  Essentially, as soon as I assign users for 'Protected Files' then it pops up the log-in prompt for everything... even Public Shares.

I had this working before--it's how it was set up when I first received the unit.  One thing I do remember is when I browsed my DNS-323 it didn't show a Volume... just the two folders 'Public Shares' and 'Protected Files'.  Thus the reason I deleted the 'Volume 1' share.  Anyway, I just can't seem to figure out how to set this up, and I need to get it done ASAP.  Any thoughts/ideas?  Did they change something in one of the firmware updates?  And help would be appreciated!!!

This behaviour is a result of upgrading the firmware.

Incidentally, you won't see a "Volume_2" in RAID1, RAID0 or JBOD configurations. You also won't see it in separate drive configurations when you have not configured "Volume_2" as a share in the web interface. By default, "Volume_1" and "Volume_2" shares are created, where applicable.

Many have discovered a factory reset after a firmware upgrade also solves many issues.

Complete and total bummer.

Okay--so how does this work?  I have one folder that should be non-protected, yet it now prompts for a user name and password.  The ONLY people that have user names and passwords are those who can access the "protected files" folder.  So now we have to give out the user names and passwords for the protected files folder so people can access the public shares folder?  If we do this, this means they can access protected files, as well.  Why in the heck even set up users or passwords?  I'm not a big techno network wizard... this is really confusing me.

You have 2 options. Create another user that only has access to your "public" folder e.g. username = public, password = public and give those details out. Option two is look at modifying the behaviour with an unsupported script.

Also, this may or may not help but if you have logged in to Windows with the same username and password as the one the NAS is expecting, it won't prompt for it.
