120 Mbps WAN connection issue on A2 version
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:10:56 AM »

Hi,

On Dec 23rd I have changed my ISP to have 120 Mbps internet connection. Problem that I have with my DIR-655 (Hardware Version: A2, Firmware Version: 1.33NA) that is reducing internet speed to around 87 Mbps.

Testing internet speed using network cable (CAT6):
1.) Cable modem -> Laptop  = download speed around 110 Mbps
2.) Cable modem -> DIR-655 -> Laptop  = download speed around 87 Mbps

DIR-655 WAN Port Speed set to 1000 Mbps.

Do you know to to do to surf with more then 87 Mbps?

Best regards

Marek

Might set up static IP addresses for you devices. And it's not like 87Mb connections are that bad. Really?  ::) I only have a 10Mb package at home. I'm here at my families place and there connection is 5mb. There also could be other issues on the line too. is your internet Service DSL or cable? Some DSL and newer cable modems have internal routers that need to be bridged. if cable, are there any splitters on the line? The more splitters on the line, the lower the signal strength doing into the modem.

Hi,

As stated below I have cable modem. There is one splitter on the cable before cable modem but based on ISP technician signal is very good.

How static IP assignment can reduce router throughput? I do not understand as IP assignment happens only at the beginning only on router-laptop handshake?

Based on testing internet speed using CAT6 network cable (see testing procedure below) I can suspect that router is the bottle neck as it slows down from connection 110 Mbps to 87 Mbps.

1.) Cable modem -> Laptop  = download speed around 110 Mbps
2.) Cable modem -> DIR-655 -> Laptop  = download speed around 87 Mbps

Do you know what to configure in the DIR-655 to achieve full speed (110 Mbps)?

Best regards

Marek

What happens if you set up static IP address, setup QoS rule for the IP address, turn off any extra features like Protected WiFi, things that you will not use. Set Firewall to UDP/TCP to Endpoint Independent. Turn off any Advanced DNS options. Turn off WiSH.

Your loss is negligible honestly. I would remove all splitters for testing.

Back it up, then do a factory reset, install new Firmware and try again. Worked for me..
I don;t get it how other routers like Netgear never have these problems... oh well..

trust me, netgear routers DO have problems....went thru that He77 a few years back....thats why I got the DIR-655...cause my netgear router never worked as advertised for more than a day or so at a time....

But seriously....120 Mbps from your ISP ?  what you doing with that pipe ?  I barely get 4 or 5 Mbps bursts from a place like microsoft on a big update, and I have like 16 Mbps service with comcast here.....
Who out there in internet land even has 100 Mbps on the source end for downloading ?

AM curious what dollars you might be paying for that baby ?  I pay $52/mo for my tier...tho little ad I just got says its going up to $54/mo on Jan 1, 2011

Is out 655 even supposed to really be able to handle that kind of internet pipe ?  I know it has a Gb port for an input..... But maybe you need to look at an industrial unit rather than a SOHO unit like the 655.....

Hi,

It cost me, in Poland, $49 per month in 24 months contract. What is important also for me is the upload speed which is 10 Mbps. I work very often from home and I my company laptop is configured that way that it has off-line folders set up so to get access to them I have to synchronized.

DIR-655 A2 should be able to get more then 120 Mbps as its A4 version can do 257 Mbps (http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/30726-d-link-dir-655-a4-quick-review)

Hi FurryNutz,

Here is the setup of my DIR-655 router:

Setup:
INTERTNET
My Internet Connection is: Dynamic IP
Enable Advanced DNS Service: OFF
Use Unicasting: OFF
MTU: 1500
NETWORK
Enable DHCP Server: ON
DHCP Reservations List: ON and it has one entry

Advanced:
Virtual Servers: none
Port Forwarding: none
Application Rules: none
Enable Traffic Shaping (QoS Engine): OFF
MAC Address Filter: ON (3 MAC addresses set)
Access Control: OFF
Website Filter: OFF
Inbound Filter: OFF
Firewall Settings: OFF
ALL Application Level Gateway: OFF
Routing: OFF
WISH: OFF
Enable UPnP: ON
Enable WAN Ping Respond: OFF
WAN Port Speed: AUTO
Enable Multicast Streams: OFF
securespot: OFF
Guest Zone: OFF

Can you tell me why it is lowering speed from 105 Mbps on WAN side to 83 Mbps on LAN side?

Best regards

Marek
