NAS died
« on: January 08, 2011, 10:03:18 PM »

<Reposted summary of my thread in the DNS-343 forums as the 323 is apparently very similar>

Hoping someone out there can help.

DNS-343 purchased online via Ebay (country of origin Malaysia) 9 months ago died today.  Did a manual shutdown pre-Xmas while I went away, came back this morning and went to start up and... nothing.  No lights, no fans, nothing to indicate any sort of life at all.

Have checked the power supply and all is good.  Power is being supplied to the unit at the correct voltage and amperage.

On the unit itself however, nothing.

Have removed the 4 x Seagate Barracuda 1Tb drives and tried again - nothing.

No lingering smell of 'magic smoke'. No obvious charring or discolouration of internal parts that I can see without tearing the thing apart.

Reset button does nothing.

Local D-Link tech support unable to help - apparently D-Link's policy is it has to be dealt with by the local D-Link tech support in the country of purchase (technically Malaysia).  This means that even if I wanted to get a warranty replacement, I would have to send it back to the country of purchase from where I am in Australia.  D-Link tech support have also stated that they will not ship back to me internationally unless I pre-pay the airfreight costs.

So:

Original unit cost: A$400

Cost of shipping unit to Malaysia (by normal airfreight including insurance - which is stipulated as a requirement of the warranty): A$107

Let's assume that there is another A$107 in getting the unit back again.

Total: A$214 (53.5% of original price).  If this was a car it would be a write off.

My thinking is that if the unit is totally unresponsive it is most likely a power issue inside the box.  Does anyone have a working knowledge of the inner workings of the unit that could help in identifying the problem?

Any thoughts appreciated.
