Hi all,
I see there is a thread on this first page asking about the setup of VLANs on a DGS3100-24 however it is a bit more specific than the info I'm looking for.
I am fairly new at configuring these Dlink switches so I'm looking for some help getting started w/ VLANs, rather than specific info about them. My scenario follows:
I have a Sonicwall NSA 4500 which is the central access point into our company. On the sonicwall I have two interfaces configured for LAN access, one encompassing the 192.168.160.0/24 subnet and one encompassing 192.168.50.0/24. The .50/24 subnet is used for a customer who has test equipment at our site: they are able to log in via a static tunnel in our sonicwall and use RDP or Rlogin to access their test equipment. Now - both the interfaces from the sonicwall are connected to the DGS3100-24 and since the interfaces are on two separate subnets it is causing issues with routes and ARP traffic on the sonicwall (specifically, the ARP entries for VPN clients are incorrect in that they should be attached to the MAC of the 192.168.160.0/24 interface and instead they are attached to the MAC of the other interface, which causes the Sonicwall to see an IP spoof and drop packets randomly. I can resolve that issue as a VPN client user by refreshing the ARP cache on my connection to the sonicwall via the "renew" button in the VPN client.
Anyway, all that aside, I know that this is a problem, and I know that the way to fix it is to create a VLAN for the .50/24 subnet on the Dlink switch and put the port that the .50/24 interface on the sonicwall is plugged into in that VLAN.
I don't know what all the settings mean, however, and since this is a production switch which is essentially the center of the star I don't want to screw it up because it will take down everything.
So, my question is really is there a place (maybe here, maybe in some documentation) where I can learn about how the VLANs work on these Dlink switches, what the settings mean (tagged vs. untagged, trunks, etc) and just get a general understanding of how to set this up? I really have never worked with VLANs before so my understanding right now is close to nothing. However, I am very strong in terms of networking and security in general so it shouldn't be hard for me to pick up, I just need somewhere to start.
Hopefully this question isn't too general. If I can be more specific about what I need to know, please post as such and I will clarify.
Thanks!
