4th hard drive goes missing
« on: July 16, 2010, 07:11:09 PM »

Hello,

I have 4 Seagate 1.5TB (ST31500341AS) drives in Raid5.  Recently, the fourth drive would go missing and the system would show as "degraded".  If I power down the unit and reboot the fourth drive would be found and the system would take a day to resync and things are fine.  Until a few days later when the fourth drive would go missing again.  I suspected a hard drive failure so I installed a new hard drive of the same model.  Of course I lost all 4.5TB of data on the NAS as many others have experienced.
However, the new 4th drive also continues to go missing so I'm thinking it is not a hard drive failure.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Does anyone have any thoughts?
   Thanks.

Hello Again,

Here is some additional information I should have included in my first post.
    - The NAS and OLED firmware version are both 1.03 (8/14/2009)
    - By "goes missing" I mean Hard Drive Info shows:
HARD DRIVE INFO :
Volume Name:     Volume_1
Volume Type:    RAID 5
Sync Time Remaining:    Degraded
Total Hard Drive Capacity:    4423105 MB
Used Space:     187320 MB
Unused Space:    4235784 MB

and the SMART information shows up for the first 3 drives but the 4th drive shows no SMART data.

Thanks.

Paul, did you ever get any answers to this?  I have had my 4th drive go missing and a degraded message as well.
