Using the DIR 855 as a range extender
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:23:47 PM »

I have recently purchased a Dir 855 in hopes of being able to use it as a range extender for my wireless network. The 855 is wired to an older model, the Dir 655, which acts as the "Primary" router if you will. What is the proper way to configure the routers to enble the Dir 855 to work properly. Any help would be much appreciated.

Plug the 855 to the 655 using the LAN ports between the two (do not use WAN/Internet on the 855) disable DHCP on the 855. Assign it a static IP to the 855. Done. Works fine. I did this for a while.

I found the 855 will start out fast. IE: 18MBps on file transfers from my DAP1522 clients. Then it starts to slow down over time. Video streaming for higher bit-rate content was not reliable from my server.

But as a AP for general use it was pretty solid.
