need to extend the range f my DGL-4500
« on: August 12, 2009, 08:06:54 PM »

I've got a DGL-4500 and would like to extend the range. I'm thinking of installing some higher db antenna's to extend the range so it will be able to reach a shop we have 80 yards from the house. I also would like to use my DIR- 624 as part of the extending of the range as well as to setup a network in the biulding as an extention to the house network. What model antenna and how many do I need? The DGL-4500 has three antenna's, do I need to get three? Also how do I connect the two routers, The DGL-4500 which has the internet connection and the DIR-624 that will be used in the biulding to connect three computers there? Is this possible or is there a better way ?

Just make sure the antennas have the proper connector and are DUAL BAND, supporting both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bandwidths.

The vast majority of antennas are only for the 2.4-2.5ghz ranges and the DGL-4500 needs an antenna which is made to transmit/receive both the high and low bands.

When I first got my DGL-4500, I immediately replaced the three antennas with those big Linksys 7dBi high gain R-SMA antennas (i already owned two from my previous router), and my D-Link ran like ****.

Which reminds me.... i should sell these Linksys antennas off. They still retail for like $38 each at Newegg.

You might consider using a wireless ethernet bridge on the receiving end to strengthen the network reception.  I had to do this before so my wireless clients could consistantly receive a good signal on the other side of my house away from the router.  Apart from that you need a wireless router with beam forming technology which is way more expensive than the 4500.

I bought a DAP-2553 Access Point that is located on the other end of the house away from the router. It is hardwired to one of the ports on the router. This now gives me a strong signal for computers on the remote end of the house, that the DGL-4500 just wasnt reaching.

I was wondering if there is a way to make my DIR-625 router act as an access poiint to extend the range of my DGL-4500? I recently bought an "ANT24-0230 Xtreme N 2.4Ghz Indoor Antenna" to help the range of my DGL-4500. Where I had no signal in our small engine shop out back, a good to fair signal was present on my laptop. I hope that by getting one of these antenna's for the wireless card I plan on buying for the desktop pc at the shop, it will help pull in and boost the signal better than my laptop did.
