DNS 321 and Xbox 360
« on: October 26, 2008, 06:13:47 PM »

I'm pretty new to the NAS world, however I thought it would be cool to be able to play music and movies from my xbox.  However, I've encountered a problem. My xbox 360 sees the NAS easy enough, but when I try to access certain movies saved in separate folders it just shows another folder for my to click on under the same name? Am I missing something?

Some movies play fine while others I can't even access the folder.

I also have similar problems with my Xbox 360.  I've tried reindexing my media directory and it fails midway.  I've left it reindexing all night and this happens.  And when things do stream, they stutter heavily or don't decode properly.

I am also having the same issue with my xbox 360 and DNS-321. So far by process of elimination I have found out that files will show up correctly on the xbox 360 if arranged a certain way:

1. Names of folders have to be 24 characters or less

2. From the root directory - you can not put files more than 2 folders deep. Ex. Volume_1/My Media/My Movies/file.avi

3. Only the first 30 files will show up in each folder.

I've gotten all my .divx / .xvid / .avi / .wmv video files to play this way. It's a really inconvenient process but hopefully d-link puts out a fix for this.  :-\

Thank for the input geo, I started just using a windows media centre extender, but I almost destroyed my computer trying to apply codecs and such, so I'm glad I don't have to deal with that.

I'll have to try your method  :)

The Xbox360 will not be properly supported by the DNS-321 until firmware 1.01.
