VPN to 330
« on: October 30, 2008, 09:35:48 AM »

I am looking into buying a DIR-330 for my small business.
I have a question about the VPN capability.

Once the VPN is enabled on the router, how do I connect?
Do I use the Windows VPN connector?
Does the router authenticate the user?
If so, once authenticated, will I have access to systems on the LAN?
Or do I have to have a server setup with Routing and Remote Access set up on it?

Please advise....

Thanks!

You can connect with the VPN client of your choice.
Yes, you can use the Windows VPN Client with a PPTP tunnel.
Yes, the router authenticates the user based on the credentials you provide.
Yes, the remote user will have a routed path to your LAN, this will allow him to use any non-broadcast service.  This should allow all common applications, the primary exception being NetBIOS name resolution, which requires broadcast traffic.
No, you will not need a server on the LAN.
