Does anyone know the best solution for adding a hi-gain antenna to the DIR-655 router?  Thanks.

I've taken off one of the standard antennas and added the Hawking 7dBi omni-directional http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=32&FamID=58&ProdID=214. This way I can place it outside the room (1m wire). It does increase range and quality a lot.

Hi,

Which antenna did you replace ?  Did you test the effectiveness of the Hawking unit by swapping antenna leads ?

I replaced the bottom antenna, and it gave me better reach and max 130 Mbps on the laptop downstairs (it's an Intel chipset  ;) ). Other connections gave less signal.

I assume that would be the one that is on bottom in the vert stand.  So the left most antenna.

But it does not support N?

And what about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833996013 ?

Which is better?

I was curious about that dlink antenna. I thought you connected it to your desktop's NIC, though. I'd rather have it on my router if that works.

According to http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=545 as shown by the pictures it works for the DIR-655 or those two NICs.

So am I right in thinking it attaches directly to the DIR-655 by simply removing the antennas and putting the three lines in their place?

Seems simple, no wiring to do right?

For what it is worth, I contacted Hawkings and they said to connect the anenna in the middle port.  I don't know if that is arbitrary or a technical requirement.  I bought D-Link's external antennas for my desktop computers and frankly they did a pretty good job.  I bought one for each of my "under the desk" computers and the signal stength went up at least one bar if not two.  I think I still have a signal strength problem in my house.  I am going to relocated the router and modem "on top" the PCs and see if my droppoing out problem goes away.  If it does, I will purchase a Hawkings antenna.

Hooking up a single antenna will not give the desired performance, and may in fact be detrimental to performance.  Draft N uses constructive interference to achieve it's high data rates, this requires a matched antennae array that should be aligned in a particular fashion.  A single antenna, regardless of which lead it is hooked to can not provide this effect.  At best you will be getting 802.11g at any distance that would be greater than the reach of the other 2 antennae.

To those trying to hook up the D-Link Draft N Antennae Array,
Yes, just connect the three ends of the antennae to the three leads on the card or router.
