Any success to show&play dvd ripped using WMC ?
« on: November 02, 2008, 05:49:51 PM »

Hi,
I've tried all the possibilities (spent many hours on websites) to show my DVDs into the DSM-750 in Windows Media Center mode. The best result was to convert my DVDs to .DVR-MS, but I've no covers, and the videos are in TV-Records folder, >:( not in Videos folder :-\.
Using the Extender mode (not WMC), I can find and read DVDs converted into .MPG, but no covers too. Besides, browsing directories and files, when all items have the same icon is poor :'(...

Both ways are not really user-friendly and certainly not for real end-users.

I'm about to get back the DSM-750 at store and buy an XBOX 360 instead, because it seems I'll get more success.

Just before doing that : Any of you have succeed to show DVDs covers and play the DVDs ? If yes, explain me how. The extender is quite good, except this missing feature (well all the extenders have the problem too, but some have the luck to bypass it...)

Thanks,
David

Finally, after 5 days, I succeed  :D :D :D!
All works perfectly :
_in many ways (TV/DVD Library and Pictures/Videos)
_in many formats (VOB as MPEG, DIVX, DVR-MS, WMA)
_with covers (Folder.jpg or SameFilmName.jpg)
_using WMC extension (So beautiful)
_1080p (if the format support it)
_Wireless-G with no lag (server is Vista 32bits SP1/Quad core wired connected to router linksys WRT54G)

I don't know exactly what I've done to unlock the problem ;D, but I'll go deeper to have the exact procedure.

Finally, I keep the DSM-750  :P

[Edited]

No, I returned the item :-[. I wasn't able to play ripped DVD with AC3/51 soundtrack (99% of my collection). Lost too much time to make it working at this price >:(.

Shame you returned it. The DSM-750 will play MPEG2 with a 5.1 AC3 soundtrack directly over UPNP - no need for WMC at all. Just rename the .VOB file to .MPG and it plays. Or use a program like mediacoder to generate the same file format in a single file if you have multiple VOBs (copy or transcode video and copy audio works...).

I think the main thing one should be getting a sense of is that more and more people want to stream their video collections from a server or computer of some sort, and there seems to be no easy, uncomplicated way of accomplishing this with the 750 and WMC.  I think D-link should be working on developing some some of companion programme to go along with the 750 which would allow some sort of video streaming from a server, and Microsoft should be doing the same (including the ability to stream directly from a CD/DVD on the remote machine.

We're starting to see some fantastic solutions from competitors, and many of them can stream any imaginable file format.  There are also some very nice alternative interfaces to the Vista Media Center, so Microsoft is going to have to try a little hard with the next release.

At the moment, I'm only using the 750 to record and play back content from regular analogue cable programs, but I can well imagine that I'll be frustrated if I decide to start some sort of video library.  The only thing the 750 has going for it is that is fanless, keeping is absolutely quiet.
