I can't achieve 300 mbps on my macbook pro, only 130 mbps with the Dlink 655. After reading this forum it seems that the problem is that I need a 5ghz band on my router to achieve 300 mbps on a macbook pro. So my question is, if it's worth it to exchange this router and get a more expensive router that can achieve 300 mbps on my computer. I am really new to this, and don't want to spend more money if I won't even be able to see the difference. So basically i just want to know if 130 mbps is good enough, or if its worth it to spend the extra money on a router that can get me 300 mbps with my macbook pro.

The answer depends on the use you make of the wireless connection. If you depend heavily on HD streaming you might want to get true 300 Mbps. If it is primarily internet traffic, Xvid/dvix video, audio streaming and some LAN file sending the 150 Mbps connection should do nicely. I guess you don't have a 300 Mbps internet access ISP  so you don't lose internet speed.

And to be honest, 300 Mbps is not the actual speed you get. You get between 80 and 120 Mbps in real life  data transfer with full N (300 Mbps) due to overhead etc. Do not imagine you are going to 300mbit. That is still typical wireless over reach. It is still simplex ie it cannot transmit and receive at the same time.

To calculate the throughput in Megabytes: Divide and calculate bearing in mind that:

b= bit
B=Byte
8 bits= 1 byte

It could be as simple as the adapter in the Mac is not capable of channel bonding on the 40mhz range.

Also remember that connection speed and PHI rate are different.

I just did one of those online speed tests and I am averaging around 25 Mb/s. So does that mean that I shouldn't worry about getting a 300 Mbs router that works with my mac, since I am only getting 25 Mb/s anyway? For the record I am using both my PS3 and my 360 via ethernet. I am only using my macbook for downloads, browsing, etc. I basically just want to know that if I go out and buy a dual band n router, that it will be worth it.

An online speed test is not going to tell you speed between the router and the client. It's going to report the lowest common denominator. That being your internet connection, you'll never see the full potential of the wireless connection through a test like that.

25 Mb/s you say on your internet connection...So you have a 200 Mbps internet connection? 

On topic: If you really need it it. Like I said, why get a client-laptop connection of 300 Mbps when your internet access is only 10 or 20 Mbps. Internet will not go any faster then your ISP connection. If you want to spend extra money for nothing, please do...

Ya I understand what you are saying. I guess my only concern is that from reading online, the only way to get true "n" is with 5ghz so that i can achieve the link speed of 300 mbps. I guess that is what confused me.
