cannot get printer to work with shareport
« on: December 28, 2008, 07:37:55 AM »

I am trying to use my lexmark X3470 printer through shareport and I cannot get it to work.

The router detects it, and i get the message in the shareport utility but I always get an error saying that I am unable to communicate with the printer, when i try to print.

Some times I have to unplug the router and plug it back in for it to detect the printer, a simple reboot doesn't allow it to detect it, but it detects usb thumb drives and hard drives no problem.

I am running the latest firmware, drivers and the printer works hooked up directly to my computer.

Have you installed the printer as a local USB printer and coupled the printer with the Shareport utility?

You might wanna check with Lexmark if the printer is useable with USB printservers.

I have successfully configured HP LaserJet 6L with 5 wireless and wired clients today !!!!!

I have Parallel to USB convertor cable from HP LaserJet 6L (and 1TB USB external drive) connected to DIR-655 USB port.

I installed Shareport utility on all clients. I get Shareport pop-up and detects the printer (or HDD). I connect from any wireless/wired client and just print (or access HDD). I deleted all my local printer instances from where I'd originally hardwired the printer. I had some difficulty with Symantec Client Firewall on one of the laptop, so I disable the Symantec Fireewall client, run shareport utility and re-enable the Symantec Firewall ( i have not figured why this is happening though)

It works great  for printer and WDC 1TB drive. Pl note that HDD may take sometime to connect and come online.

DLINK, GREAT JOB ! You solved my long pending problem. I am going to try a USB Hub to connect  HDD + Printer + FlashDrive to DIR-655 all at once this week.

Just to clarify in my previous post above, I have tried 1TB USB 2.0 external HDD and HP Laserjet separately,  one USB device to USB port of DIR-655 at a time for now.

I will post when I have success using a 4 port USB HUB connecting USB port on DIR-655 with 3 to 4 USB external devices like HDD, Printer, USB FlashDrive etc.

Dumblink,
Good to hear you got your config to work.
But...you're kind of 'hijacking' the topic which is dedicated to someone with an issue. You can post your successes in a topic in the Beta section.
