Macbook Pro questions

Hello all and thanks for viewing:



I have the new Macbook Pro and I was wondering about a couple of things. I just bought the 655 and I'm still messing with the settings to get the best signal/speed

I have Roadrunner Turbo with Power Boost and I normally get between 25-30 mbps down and 1 mbps up both wired and wireless with the company issued Netgear wireless router. But the frequent dropouts when bad enough for me to buy the D-Link 655.

Currently running at 15-18 mbps down and 1 mbps up (WIRELESS). Above noted speeds wired.

The current router version is 1.20

1. What settings can I get to get my speeds back?
2. Is having 5 ghz that important for getting N speeds?
3. When I look at the current wireless devices connected, it says I'm connected at a G when my wireless card is a N.
4. There is no name (blank) for my laptop while all the others have their computer name. Any ideas?
5. How can I see what kind of connection speed I have to the router?

1. What is your QoS reporting? (Sorry to answer your question with a question)
2. Not really..
3. Try locking down your wireless to use 802.11N only, specify a channel and use Auto 20/40MHz for Channel width. Also use WPA encryption with AES cipher type.
4. apple menu > system preferences > sharing > computer name (top text box)
5. Check out The status page and go to wireless.


BTW.. 15-18mbps is pretty good if you ask me.. But I know we would all love to have more  ;)

Here are my answers:

1. Where do I find this? (I know more questions....)
2. Thanks....good to know
3. Will do when I get home tonight...and report results later.
4. same as above.
5. This is where I see it says that it's in G. I have 4 total laptops, all running G cards except my Mac is a N card. But all laptops say they are in G mode on the status page.

The Netcrap I had in before had much higher speeds....need to get back to those numbers.

OK...the follow up

3. I changed to Auto 20/40MHz for Channel width and changed to WPA-Personal encryption with AES cipher. It was then that the "N mode" came up on the "status page". So the encryption type enabled the "N mode" for my laptop. I had WEP 64 encryption before. Learned something there.
4. I do have a name there but for some reason, it doesn't come up at the connected "LAN Computers" section. The 4 other Windows machines all have names.
5. Now my router connection speed is between 78-104 Mbps and my wireless laptop adapter has a link speed of 130 Mbps.

My internet download speeds are between 26-30 Mbps.......all is now well
