Out of the box - can't configure
« on: January 11, 2009, 03:05:50 AM »

I've got the 323 hooked directly to my computer, and I can't connect to the device "The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again." when I use my browser to point to the IP address of the 323.  Easy Search identifies the 323, but when selected, it keeps the 'Configuration' button greyed out.

I've disabled both windows firewall and my avast! anti-virus, but to no avail. The drive that's in the enclosure is brand new and reads fine outside of the 323.

I thought it might be a network cable issue, but that's been swapped out, and the LAN connection is okay, but is only sending packets, not receiving.

Any help would be great . . .

Hi mojojo,

There are two scenarios:

1) DNS-323 Directly connected to PC

In this scenario, the DNS-323 will auto-assign an IP Address of 192.168.0.32 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.  In order to connect to the DNS-323, you will need to do the following:

- Set the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Gateway on your PC (ex: 192.168.0.100, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.0.1)
- Temporarily disable port filtering software on your PC (ex: firewall, anti-virus, etc.)

This should allow you to connect to the DNS-323 using a web browser that is pointing to:

http://192.168.0.32

Keep in mind that Gigabit NIC's support auto MDI-X (crossover) cable.  If the NIC on your PC is not Gigabit, you may need to obtain a certified MDI-X (crossover) cable.

2) DNS-323 connected on a LAN

In this scenario, the DNS-323 will attempt to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server.  Most folks have their router serve as a DHCP server for their internal LAN.   In order to connect to the DNS-323, you will need to do the following:

- Look at the DHCP server IP allocation table for the MAC Address of the DNS-323 to determine
the IP Address assigned to the DNS-323
- Temporarily disable port filtering software on your PC (ex: firewall, anti-virus, etc.)

This should allow you to connect to the DNS-323 using a web browser that is pointing to:

http://192.168.0.32

If you are unable to connect to the DNS-323, it could indicate that your router (or other) network device is filtering IP traffic.  Some routers include a UPnP service that can be enabled so as to facilitate connectivity to the DNS-323.

Lastly, in some very *rare* conditions, you may need to issue the following commands on your PC from a Command Prompt (CMD.EXE):

- IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS
- NBTSTAT -RR
- NBTSTAT -R

Hi Hilaireg,

Thank you very much for your help, I've got it to configure just fine by using scenario 1.  The only issue that I have now is to figure out how to operate my computer with a static IP and still be able to leech internet from my neighbour's connection using my usb wireless adapter - but at the very least I can start backing up overnight.

Thanks again,
M

hmmm ... although tempting as it is, you may want to invest in your own connection.  If you're able to connect to your neighbour's WiFi, likely others are too - which means there isn't much privacy.

Cheers,
