I recently set up a DNS323 with an ST310005N1A1AS-RK drive, and an ST31000340AS drive (on the recommended drives list) in a RAID1 config. I had ordered two of the -340AS drive from two separate online retailers (trying to ensure drives from different production lots). When one of the retailers failed to deliver, I picked up the -RK drive from BestBuy.
It's been working well so far, but the file transfer speed has been a bit slow. I've been moving photo files, iTunes files, CDs and CDROM content onto the DNS via a wireless 802.11G connection, and getting 3 to 4 Mb/sec transfer rates at best. Having never set up anything like this before, I'm unsure what to expect in terms of speed, but all of this is taking a loonnnnng time (hours, days).
I'm using the 1.06 firmware. Note that the -RK drive ships with the jumper in the SATA position; the -RK instructions indicate the jumper needs to be removed to make the drive work in the faster SATA II config (though D-Link seems to be silent on whether or not the DNS is compatible or not with SATA II). As the router I'm using has 10/100, not gigabit ethernet, setting the DNS to 100 rather than 'auto' did boost the speeds somewhat.
I'm an amateur first timer at all of this stuff. Hope this is helpful. Will be very curious about your experience should you choose to post it...
