A very basic question, but I've tried to figure it out, and I can't.  Do I need to get additional software or can I use backup software that is on the NAS already or on Windows 7 or XP already?  I'm trying to schedule automatic backups of both our laptops to the DNS-323, but have no idea how to do it. 

I'm looking for a basic set of steps.  Can anyone list them out for me please as well as yes or no to my questions above?

You can use either. Windows 7 has a build in backup which you can schedule.
Think your DNS-323 of just another storage point. In other words, whatever backup software you use configure it to save the backup file(s) in your NAS.

I use the backup software on the NAS.

Start by creating a network share on the laptop so that the files you wish to backup are accessible from the network, and then configure the application so that it knows what you want backed up, the credentials to access it, and the schedule you wish used.

You will need to make sure the laptop is attched to the network and powered on when the scheduled backup is to be run

I use Acronis True Image.  Works great, set and forget.   If the machine if off, it runs the next time it starts.  I get an email once a week when the job completes.  Back up images can be browsed, mounted or modified.  Acronis supports full, differential or incremental back ups.  There are many good apps out there.  This one is easy to use.
