DIR-651 Port Forwarding Issue
« on: January 22, 2012, 10:48:52 AM »

I have been trying to forward a certain port number for the longest time, to no avail. I've gone even as far as trying it on the Virtual Server mode via the admin panel in the router, but nothing. I am at my wits end as to why this port will not forward, at all. Maybe someone here can help me?

Hardware Version: A1
Firmware Version: 1.10NA
ISP: Cable (Time Warner Cable Roadrunner)

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.  IP is given, tried accessing this IP with the properly forwarded port, no go.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Done
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.Done
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.Done

Done everything, still not able to use the port. When checking to see if the port can be seen, I receive this when checking canyouseeme.org

Success: I can see your service on <IP> on port (<port number>)
Your ISP is not blocking port <port number>

What application are you running that needs port forwarding? Might get ahold of the Mfr of the application and ask them about the specifics, if any.

Already went down that route, the application used to have no problem forwarding until I bought a new router (DIR-651)

How are you configuring the router? Virtual Server? Port Forwarding and or Application rules? You might also need to use Virtual Server settings as well.

I've tried Port Forwarding, Virtual Server AND Application Rules, none of them are a go.

When checking the application to see if it will connect to my public IP (75.176.110.139) along with the port, it doesn't want to read anything, but when connecting via the private IP (192.168.0.101), it reads it fine...

Possible issue with this modem. Have seen numberous issues with Arris modems.
Is this your modem?
http://www.speedguide.net/routers/arris-touchstone-tm602g-voip-gateway-557
This is classified as a gateway which mean it's possible it has a router built in.
What IP address are you seeing on the 651 router on the Status/Device Info/Wan section?
192.168.#.# or a ##.##.###.### address?

FYI, these modems have been know to be a source of connection issues with external routers.
Can you access the modems web page at 192.168.100.1?
Do you have Phone service thru this modem or just internet data?

Hmm. i might guess that there is a possible issue between this modem and the router. This being a new router and the old one working, there maybe other factors in the newer router that could make it more incompatible with this modem. I presume that if you connect up your PC direct to the modem that the ports open?
I would call D-Link and ask a level 2 tech support if they might be able to help. I would also contact your ISP support and see if they might provide any information on what external routers work with these modems.

How are you connecting to the 651? wired or wireless? If our needing wireless, I might recommend getting into a DAP model AP for connecting to the arris modem and AP don't have a router however will provide you with wired and wireless access to the modem and Internet.

Again, have seen many issues with Arris modems and personally I don't recommend them however understand that some users have to use them and in this case, you'll need to look into some other alternatives for using routers and APs. What you might want to do is ask the ISP if there is an Upgrade to the Arris modem that has a better built in router and user inferface and DMZ. If you can get a modem that has a DMZ then you can any router or AP into the DMZ and then ports should work well. Other than this. I don't think theres anything else you can do right now. Only thing I might try is a different model router or AP. I would recommend an AP though in this case. Might be wise to reduce the complexity of the set up by taking out the external router and use a DAP. I.E. DAP 1525 or 1522, something like that.
