I have a DNS323 connected through a DGS2208 switch, Cat 5e cables.  Ran through tests with different jumbo frames settings and got the following results - all in megabytes per second (MBps).

Jumbo MTURead MBpsWrite MBps
Disabled2016
30002617
40002818
50003218
60003218
70003317

Those are all the MTU settings my mobo supports.  Stuck with 6000 MTU based on the results.

I thought about making some Cat 6 cables and trying it out - I've read it's theoretically faster - but don't know if it's worth the effort.  Does anyone have an opinion?

CAT5e cable meets spec for gigabit (as in fact, does CAT5) - assuming your installation meets specification, you will see no change in performance by switching to CAT6.

The physical difference between CAT5, CAT5e & CAT6 is the number of twists per inch - the "tighter" the twist, the better the noise rejection of the cable - so CAT6 is no "faster" - it's less noisy.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.
