Intermittent Wireless Issues - Can You Help?
« on: February 08, 2011, 08:33:57 AM »

Hello everyone!

I have a DGL-4500.  It's sitting about 10 feet from where I use my laptop.  When I remote login to my desktop through the internet, the "wired" connection appears to work pretty well.

When I remote login to my desktop directly via the wireless connection.  The connection freezes on occasion then comes back.

Has anyone experienced this and found a quick fix for it?

Thanks!

What current FW version is loaded?
What hardware version is the 4500?
What wireless mode is the 4500 set for? Mixed?
Any other WiFi in the area?
Any Cordless house phones?

1) Firmware Version : 1.23NA,  2010/04/15
2) Hardware, not sure.  I'm at work right now.
3) Mixed: n, g, & b
4) I do see another secured network from my home.
5) Yes.

3) Mixed: n, g, & b> Try using Single Mode G to test, they try Mixed mode G and N. No need to broadcast A or B since most devices are using G and N now days.

5) Yes. > What frequency are these cordless phones. If around the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz range, this can cause interference.

Your FW version should be good. There was only one version we saw that had some issues with wireless and router hangs, that was v1.21. Was fixed in v1.22 and v1.23.

also any iPhones on the network?

No iPhones!
Will try the different modes.
Would the wireless phones make a difference even when not in use?

Theoretically they shouldn't. Not sure if they do any broadcasting while off or not. I would do this if you can, turn off ALL wireless and cordless devices then test out your connection again.

I notice that some A2 hardware seems to be exhibiting some wireless issues more than A1's are.

I would also check the channel to. Try using 11.
I would also recommend setting up static IP addressing for ALL devices connecting to the router.
Turn off any Advanced DNS services and make sure your Primary and 2ndary DNS IP addresses are filled from your ISP in the Basic/Internet/Manual section.

Do you remote from with in your house or remote from work?

I'll try your suggestions.

Quick status.

I changed to Mixed G & N and to channel 11.

Appears to be working well at this point.  Hope it lasts.

Thanks very much for your suggestions.

Sweet, congrats!

I'd buy another DGL-4500 just because Furry is so good at troubleshooting these things and is active on here.   :D

Can you try single mode G or N for a period of time?
