DGL-4500 Droping Signals *Mabie FIX*
« on: February 17, 2011, 01:01:01 AM »

Hello,

I have had this router now for over 4 years according to the board inside the unit A1 was made in 2007 but after having no problems what so ever with this device I started getting disconnecting problems from Nintendo wii and my fiance laptop as well as a friend of ours laptop and then the wired connection to the desktop started giving me problems so I reset it and that did not fix it so I then connected straight to the modem and got my internet working again so after that I hooked it back up again and noticed it doing it all over again so I knew then it was not my isp and I had them check the connections too and it was fine so I know electronics get dirty over time like dust Bunny's and if there is metal shavings in the air or any metallic stuff that can cause shorts and faulty grounds so I went on a quest to take this thing apart and I disconnected every piece of wire that I could and took a q-tip and rubbing alchole to every wire connector and every electrical tracer on the PCB and I soaked every shiny object with that q-tip and there were some buildup on the board and it was like a crusty matter so I duno what it was but it's gone now and there were a few other spots that were dirty so after cleaning everything that I could and making sure not to touch them after I cleaned them I put it all back togeather and put the antennas back on and having it up and running it seems to be doing better and no more dropped signals and I have always ran the newest version of firmware so it was not that but I thought I would post this and maybe some one else can try this and see if it works for them as well?

I do have to say it was very easy and I am not responsible for breaking your device so be very careful if you try this.

Wow, interesting you though of this. Will have to keep this in mind. I also wonder if you by chance by taking the router appart that maybe the wires in side could have been not connected well and by taking it apart and back together again, could have make the wires make contact better too. Good idea though. I also have an A1 however I don't use it's WiFi much. I'm mostly wired at my house. I will keep this in mind. Maybe others on here can check this out and see if it helps. I would be concerned for routers that are new and under warranty however. Let us know how it works out for you.

well it has yet to drop out and I am a constant user and it seems to be doing fine so I am pretty confadent that this is the fix for me and might not be the fix for others but it was an idea that I wanted to share because I know how a lot of money in somthing and it does not work any more you would want to try and get the most out of it so I hope I can get a longer life span on this router and mabie see many more firmware updates as well but this router has been well for me and sice a few days ago is the only time it started showing problems so I love this router a lot and don't have much money now that I own a house and utility bills along with it so I wanted to try and fix this myself.....

Yes I would like to stress if your unit is under warenty to always use the customer service dept ALWAYS because they know what they are doing and could be more of assistants to you and if they break somthing then it will still be safe and they will replace the part of no charge but I took the chance and I know what I am doing when it comes to electronics so I was not too scared so if you are comterbul with your skills please keep this idea in mind and thank you for the comment :)

Something also that brings to mind. I worked at a mom and pop electronics repair shop for a while. We use to do a lot of solder jobs on various items. We found that a lot of circuit boards were automated for solder work. Sometimes heat and or just bad solder work was the cause of failures. We found that running a manual solder job over the board help fix some if not most of these issues with solder work. Wonder if doing some minor solder work would be of any help as well.  ???

That's interesting.  Roxcylemmon is the router located in a humid environment?  Are you the original owner?Even so, I would guess that it being on all the time would generate enough heat to keep moisture condensation at bay.

Was the crusty matter you described corrosion?

Congrats on the fix, great news!

This is kind of the same story for me, except with my Ps3. After month of not cleaning it I start to see my loading performance degrading. But once I clean it out and get all that dust out I hear my fans less and they don't have to spin up in speed as before. I am guessing its because the temperature is lower now so the Cpu are not limited by the heat. Because heat is the #1 killer, anyways replace those thermal gels every 3 years or so and clean your consoles and Pc!

kargo27 yes I am the only owner for this and at first I had the router on top of my cable modem and it was hot most of the time but I never really thought about it causing a problem until now but it is still working great and it has been a week or close now and no signal drops and wii is working great but I fixed it by taking it apart and just doing a clean up on it and yes the crusty stuff looked as if it could have been corrosion of some kind but it's not there no more and I am happy that you all think this is a good idea and I love posting sugestions that could help others and thank you all for the great support on this great router :)....
