Author Topic: DIR-655 MAC Filtering - Only want wifi filtered, not wired LAN nodes  (Read 6286 times)

All 3 previous wireless routers I've had were all LinkSys routers and I had to overcome a learning curve since configuring this DIR-655 is slightly different..
What I want to do is allow only the WiFi MAC addresses that I choose to access the network. It seems to me that in order to accomplish this I have to include all of my wired LAN devices' MAC filters as well. I can see having MAC filtering for WiFi devices, however why do I need to add my wired LAN devices MAC addresses?  I'm not going to allow just anyone to walk into my home off the street and plug a computer into the network via CAT-5 ethernet cable, so isn't there a way to accomplish just the WiFi allow list and the heck with the wired nodes?  The LinkSys routers I used in the past allowed me to allow the MAC filter for WiFi devices only.  Is there a way around having to allow all MAC's and just allowing the wifi's?  Thanks in advance

From what I have known with rev A and 1.30 to 1.35 firmwares the wired or Ethernet will get filtered. There is no circumventing the filter which is Mac filter for all traffic in the router.

Don't know about current versions of the hardware and firmware, but this is what I've done with my Hardware A3, firmware 1.21 Dir-655. I learned about this "trick" indirectly, from a post here from July of 2009! Search for "Bridge mode does still exist on DIR655". Even though you're not looking for a way to enable bridge mode, using the same trick in Firefox will allow you to get to normally invisible settings in the Network Filter screen, which IS what you want.

Anyway, running Firefox in "View:Pagestyle:No style" will get you the extra menus, and going to the Network Filter screen will reveal that you can now enable MAC filtering for wireless clients and wired clients separately. Just deselect "wired client" and you should be able to do what you want. Don't forget to save the change (and be careful as there is a lot of extra stuff on every settings page when you set Firefox to "View:Pagestyle:No style").

Hope this works with your version of the firmware.

Hi Billy

Off the topic but related to bridge mode. When you come back to the menu does still stay selected after reboot. Also have you bridged the unit to any other router? Thanks

The page always shows all choices, even inappropriate ones, when you access it with Firefox in the "No style" view.

I use my DIR-655 solely as an access point and unmanaged gigabit switch. I initially tried bridge mode (via the hidden items visible with "No style"), but I never got it work properly, so I disabled bridge mode and I just connected my WAN ethernet to one of the LAN ports on the DIR-655. Does everything I want, the only thing that won't work is setting the DIR-655 to automatically get the time/date via NTP, as that function is hard coded to only work via the WAN port (which isn't connected to anything in my setup).

Thanks Billy,

That mirrors what I have experienced too. Overall bridge mode is not working with 1.35NA reliably. Thanks for the MAC filtering tip though will try it once I get back to my setup.
