Remote FTP DNS-323
« on: March 25, 2011, 10:17:21 AM »

Hi

I have searched for an answer to this problem but none is clear.

I have set up FTP on a DNS-323 which I can access from my home network (Router is DSL-2640R) but I cannot remotely access the DNS over the internet going through the router.  I have portforwarded 21 on the router and a visit to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ shows that port 21 is indeed open.  The IP address of the NAS is static.

I have tried DMZ, switching off firewalls (windows and router) and anti-virus but I cannot access remote FTP (Filezilla or webbrowsers).

The following is the output for local and remote access on Filezilla:
LOCAL (works):
Status:   Connecting to 192.168.1.99:21...
Status:   Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response:   220---------- Welcome to Pure-FTPd [TLS] ----------

Response:   220-Local time is now 17:12. Server port: 21.

REMOTE (does not work - although it links to the FTP client):
Status:   Connecting to x.xx.xx.254:21...
Status:   Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Response:   220 D-Link FTP version 1.0 ready at Fri Mar 25 17:13:16 2011
Command:   USER mat
Response:   331 Enter PASS command
Command:   PASS ******
Response:   530 User mat cannot log in.
Error:   Critical error
Error:   Could not connect to server

Seems to be an issue with the router as the FTP client clearly works?  Calls to D-LINK and to my ISP are useless.  D-LINK do not support the router (as it is modded by the ISP).  The ISP (TalkTalk) are useless regarding any information other then helping you connnect to the internet....

Any help appreciated.

The welcome messages are different. It looks like you aren't actually connecting to the NAS's FTP server remotely, which would explan why user authentication has failed. Does the router have an FTP server running on port 21 perhaps?
