I have a DIR-615 Ver C 3.11.  I have been having constant issues with wireless connectivity since I got it two months ago.  I finally went to the support site and tried downloading new firmware but it came as a .bin file, and nothing on my computer would read it.  I downloaded five different programs that said it could extract the bin file, and the first four didn't work.  I finally got "freefileviewer" to actually open it, and it just gives me a file with characters and symbols.  I read up on bin files and it said it has to be burnt to a CD.  I tried doing that, but when I put the CD back in and opened the file, it just showed the same characters and symbols.  I'm wondering what the next step is.

At this point I am not happy.  I've had a product that has worked poorly since I got it, I've spent 3 hours trying to figure out this confusing firmware stuff (in 15 years I've never had a problem like this with downloading any kind of upgrade - why does D-Link have to make it so user unfriendly?), and now I've wasted a CD by burning it with 5 MB of a useless file.

Is there some other site I can download the file from in a different format?  I don't want to have to buy another router but payday is only a week away now, and this one is likely to find the business end of a hammer very soon.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.

What wireless mode are you using? Mixed?
Try Single mode G and a test?

You have two issues here, wireless connectivity and firmware update. There's no need to fiddle with the bin file on your computer, just send it to the router as follows.

The latest firmware for hardware version C1 is 3.13.   You can download the latest firmware here:
http://www.dlink.com/products/?tab=3&pid=DIR-615&rev=DIR-615_revC

This will be a zip file which includes release notes and the bin file.  Unzip the files and copy the bin file to your desktop.

Access your router and select "Tools" from the top menu, then select "Firmware" from the side menu. Should look like this: http://www.support.dlink.com/emulators/dir615_revC/310NA/tools_firmw.htm

If you haven't already done it, save your router settings else you'll have to set it up again from scratch.

In the section "Firmware Upgrade" click "Browse" and click on the bin file then click "Upload" to upgrade your firmware.  It takes a  minute or so to write the firmware to the router.  Restore the saved router settings and you should be using the 3.13 firmware.

Please let us know whether the firmware upgrade solved your problem, you could have other wireless  issues but it is reasonable to upgrade the firmware so you don't plow old ground.
