Many questions. So many questions....
« on: March 29, 2011, 08:57:03 AM »

Hi,

I've been searching this forum, which looks incredibly useful, but I am now suffering from information overload.

I have found a DNS-323 kicking around, which I am now trying to set up.  It's got 2 x 500GB disks in, set up as RAID 1 - firmware 1.06.

It also takes an age to spin up - first one disk, then a pause, then the second disk - by which time my Sonos has got bored and says the drive is not available.  Can I speed this up?  Why doesn't it just spin up both disks straight away?

Finally, can I get it to work with a Mac?  I currently have one partition/share (?) called Volume_1, but I don;t seem to be able to chnage the name.  I'd like to have two partitions on the disk - one for shared music and files (called Share) to be used by both the PC and Mac, and one for Mac backups (called Backup).  Can I use Time Machine for the backups?

I know nothing of Macs (it's my wife's) - so any Mac instructions need to be completely basic.

Am I pushing what can be done on a DNS-323?  Should I just shell out for a ReadyNAS Duo?

Thanks

What else did you receive?  User Manual? Easy Search CD?

I would think you would first want to do a hardware reset to reformat your disks and upgrade to Firmware 1.09.  The manual and CD will make this easier.

Nothing - just the NAS itself.  I'm currently in the process of moving everything off before upgrading the firmware and factory resetting.  Can I change Volume_1's name at that point?

Before I go to all the trouble though, is my idea of having one partition for shared files and one for Time Machine possible?  And will the wake from sleep time ever be fast?

Backup is good.  Now I do not always backup my data before installing firmware and factory resets because the data on the NAS is a copy of data on out primary systems and I have other periodic backups of the 323.  To the best of my knowledge, will always be referred to as Volume_1 in a RAID 1 setting.  After reading the list I changed my configuration from RAID 1 to Standard because I did not have the need for fast access and I copy data from Volume_1 to Volume_2 to have two copies of out backups.

Some have made Time Machine work on a DNS-323.   That is beyond my level.  For my Mac I use a script on the Mac to tar my $HOME directory and copy it to both Volume_1 and _2 nightly.  I keep a week's worth of backups on the unit.

To improve wake from sleep times, you can lengthen the time before the disks go to sleep.

Hang in  there.

You can always create your own shares, and ignore/remove volume_1...
