Let's Talk DNS
« on: March 11, 2011, 08:06:38 PM »

Got some DNS questions? Well we got answers! In this topic we will discuss DNS, so get those questions or answers ready'ed up!

FAQ: (Frequently asked questions) This is a work in progress and does not represent the final version

* What is a DNS (Domain Name System)

Domain Name System (DNS) Translates worded websites into Ip addresses which computers can understand. A great example would be.

* What is DNS relay?

If DNS relay is enabled you router will play the role of the DNS, meaning that all your computers will send the queries to the relay (Router) which will than send them to the DNS server. The DNS server will reply with the answer which will then be stored in the routers cache in case another machine in the network request the same address.

Yea, DNS discussion it is. Does the DGL actually keep a DNS cache? Sure you don't mean the DNS cache inside your PC? Had no idea it kept one. Any idea how big it is? Blahh, no your right. Time for a new thread.

I am not sure how big it is, I don't think D-link has commented on this, by enabling DNS relay the router will play the role of a DNS server. Having DNS relay can sometime stop certain devices to stop working or certain pages might have issues loading. I think it’s because they can't connect to their destinate'ed server because the router does not have the information in its cache. I had that issue with my VoIP device and Vudu application.

Awsome. A couple questions

1. Does the router actually keep a DNS cache? If so, any idea how many enteries? What does it set the TTL? Does it clear with a power cycle? Answered above. TY

2.How is DNS used with gaming. You would think NAT would handle incoming and outcoming by IP, and thus no domain. And if no domain, why do you need DNS. I know you do though, so I must be missing something.

3. If you use a DNS server that is outside your country, does it return results for the ip closest to that server or closest to your IP? IE, if there was a country block on some youtube content, could using a DNS server in a country not blocked be a work around?

4. With IPv6...anyone want to take a guess on how DNS will work? Makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

So how should some people use that utility that you mentioned? Where is this utility that you mentioned? Who should use it. What are recommended DNS entries for just normal users?

This question just came up.  When I do a benchtest to find the best servers in my area and I enter those into the router, do I need to restart my cable modem and also the router or just the router?

Just the router, because the router will be contacting the DNS server not your modem, if you still have DNS relay the router will play the role of the DNS for all your computers. Hope this makes things clear.

Edit:
Anyone knows how to place a video in these forums? I believe you just can't, but if you do find out help me out. Thanks.

Code: [Select]
[flash=400,300]

[/flash]

Looks like its blocked. Should be above, but that just gives me

I have tried with flv and swf. Both are blocked. If anyone knows a trick, let me know. swf would be really useful for walk throughs.

Harry, that link worked for me!  Cool walk-through.  What about Win 7?  Not necessary?

Yes I have a very cool video to show hosted by DNS advantage but these forums block it, I have tried many methods but to no avail. I really would like someone to show me how to add flash videos. I am still planning on expending this thread and answering those question but I don't have time, well I do but I am lazy... :)

It works yes, but it was supposed to embed it into the forum. But the mods have blocked embedding all but pictures, Probably not a bad idea considering the spammers.

But if you want good OS simulators, try these two sites.
