Sorry to choose this username but I'm really frustrated when I start to use wireless on this router recently:

DIR-655 A4, 1.35NA
b/g/n mixed mode

Problem: no matter what setup I choose (WPA/WPA2/...), the router will drop my wireless connection every few minutes and reconnect again in a few seconds. The log says: Authentication Failure. When I turn off security, everything is fine. I've also turned off any special features - auto channel scan, QoS, WISH, ..., I changed channel from 1 to 6 to 11..., it just doesn't work!

I've tried DIR-123 and DIR-130 on a HP laptop with XP SP2 system, built-in N wireless from a Dell laptop. Same thing now matter how I try.

Any help is appreciated...

Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

What wireless devices do you have connected?
- usually one Dell laptop and one iPhone4
Any cordless house phones?
- yes, but it makes no difference when I unplug the power for the cordless phone
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
- have used InSSIDer, 14 reported! all infrastrucure, all 2.4GHz, channel 1/4/5/6/11/7/..

Looks like your running into some WiFi congestion man. Channels are being used up and the router can't find a clear channel to use.
Try setting to a channel that is open if you can find one.

Any chance of going to 5Ghz Wifi?

I've tried Ch13 just now and nobody else is using it based on the report in InSSIDer, no luck, disconnect/reconnect every few minutes.

Actually - if it's really because of the channel selection, why no problem at all when I turn off security?

Possible that if security is turned of, might be that the good neighbor policy is disabled too. Theres not security processing so the connections don't need to be processed any further. I don't really know.

I presume this only seen on wireless right?

What happens if you try single mode G the try N with WPA2 and AES only?

Any chance you could take this router to a different location and test to see if you experience the same issues? Like a friends or families place? Would be interesting to see if this issue tracks or not.

I might also go to Best buy or frys who have a refund policy and get a 5Ghz router to test and test 5Ghz out if possible. Or get a DAP-1522 with 5Ghz and connect it to the 655. Turn off the 2.4Ghz radio on the 655.

- wireless problem only
- G only is working, any mix with N is not working, and my earlier 524 was working perfectly! I bought 655 because I thought I need to use SharePort
- I always use WPA/WPA2 auto + AES
- in the log, I see a lot of "blocked incoming UDP (TCP, ICMP) packet from ... to ..., is this a hint of any problem?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.

come on man, let's be candid on this. I don't see any problem at all without security, so it can't be interference from other equipment (phone, other Wifi, etc); I have same problem from 3 different portable devices, two of them are with Dlink USB wireless N cards, so it shouldn't be a compatibility issue. So it got to be something in the router, can you provide some suggestion about what I can do on that - e.g.: can I reduce the frequency for authentication check by the router (if this adjustment is possible); can I set the router so that it's "bundled" with the designated devices and it won't drop those devices as long as it passes the first authentication; ...

This is a long shot, but seems to have had an effect for me with a different router behaving the same.
If you tick the 'Connect when not sending SSID', which should only affect hidden networks, see how it goes.

I am beginning to suspect that either the transmission of the SSID has short breaks for some technical reason, or external interference can be a factor.

If interference affects the data side of wifi you'll just get slow links, or lots of dropped packets. If the SSID doesn't transmit properly, the system may just put up the shutters.

If it works, see what performance you get. If it's okay but still not ideal, then look for the usual suspects: cordless phones, fluorescent lights, mains cables, etc.
