2 dgl-4500s
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:23:17 PM »

i'd like to know if its possible to connect 2 DGL-4500s so that it appears as a single wireless network around the house, they are/can be physically connected.

I just need to know the settings to do this (on each router).  I've had no problem getting them to show up and operate as separate wireless networks.

If there going to be physically connected, why have them use the same SSID? Because thats trickier then you think. I think there may be a simiplier way of doing what your looking to do.

I want my 5 year old to be able to roam the house with an ipod to facetime with the grandparents.  Having to switch to the best signal kind of ruins that.  I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I don't know if it's any easier.  just looking for a way right now.

Your still switching between networks, even if they have the same SSID. The only way your not is if you go down a layer or two and set one of the routers to repeat. And even then, your still routing the data through different hardware. By its very definition, a AP can't be in more then one place at a time.

Can't you just set the Ipad to automatically roam to the network with the highest setting?  Or have you done this and has it interrupted the stream?

It interrupts the stream and results in having to reconnect, not just a pause.

You could set one 4500 to bridge mode, make the SSID and security the same but I just think its going to cause more problems then it solves. Never tried it though, so its worth a try. Furry, could you repost that post you did on making the 4500 transparent?

You sure one of these would be easier to set up off one of the 4500s?
Edimax EW-7416APn <N mode
EW-7206APg < b and B mode
EW-7301APg < b and B mode

Someone over on the 655 forum said it works great as an AP and extending the range of the main router.

You have to turn off the Styles in your web broswer first, then log into the routers web page then you'll see the hidden options. It's there, never tried it though.

Thanks for that reference Furry.  I ordered the EW-7416APN, seems like it'll work.  Its worth the $40 to not have to spend an afternoon experimenting with two 4500s lol.

Yea, for it to act as a repeater you need to use some of the hidden options, so there is no documentation for it, and very little even feed back. Thats because few have two 4500's, and even fewer still no its possible. Eitherway it's alot of work for 1 Ipad. Still not sure why the wireless radio just can't roam. sure, you will get a pause as it shifts, require the session, and rebuffer, but it shouldn't take more then 3 seconds. I know because I have a friend with a iphone with the skype app and he can walk down the street, and the phone will pick up new open networks as he goes along. Its different traffic though so..hmm. either way, let us know how it goes.
