I was originally going to go with an external as the third volume but thought that the drive swapping would be more economical if it was effective.

However, if it's not as effective, I certainly have no issues with an external.

Let's just say that other folks have tried that plan, and reported disaster - there are threads discussing it, use the search button if you want the detail.

RAID1 is for disk redundancy - NOT data backup - don't confuse the two.

Ideally, you should invest in a physically separate storage device setup in at a physically different location.  You can perform scheduled remote backups (via the Internet) to make the backup process relatively painless (and more reliable).  Depending on the quantity of data you have, it may be best to perform the first backup locally, and schedule incremental backups remotely from that point forward.

For an added layer of protection, you can still purchase a relatively inexpensive external drive (for another local backup) to supplement your DNS-323.
