Hi all,

Over the past few months I've noticed that, although my USB adapter picks up a good signal from the router (never less than 65 - 70% signal strength) and stays connected to it I am at times unable to access any websites. It started off happening once or twice a week and could happen for about 5 - 10 minutes at a time but now happens several times a day and can stop me accessing the web even though the USB adapter says that it is still picking up the signal from the router. After a period of time it will just start working again, I don't have to restart the router or anything.

I've tried changing the channel to a few different ones after using a utility to see what my neighbours were using but this hasn't made a difference. I'm using a Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB Adapter. It has the N technology so should work pretty well.

The current firmware version is 1.00VG dated 5th May 2009. In the router settings it allows you to search for an update for the firmware however it told me that my current version is the most up to date.

Can anyone think of any possible fixes? It is starting to annoy me a bit now as I work from home and keep getting my work interupted. Any advice would be appreciated!

What is your ISP service? Cable or DSL?
What is your ISP Modem? Stand alone or built in router?
Have you tried this wired and exhibits the same problem?
What happens if you change the WiFi mode to Single mode G or Mixed G and N?

Any other WiFi in the area?
Any house cordless phones?

My ISP is Virgin Media in the UK and I am on their 50 Mbs fibre optic service.
The ISP modem is a Virgin Media model that is stand alone.
I've tried it wired and not had a problem, however the issue can come and go at different times of the day so I may have just missed it.

I've tried changing the signal mode to G as well as mixed G and N as it is now and the issue still happened, however both the USB adapter and the router support N so surely that shouldn't cause a problem?

There is other wifi in the area, three on channel 11 and one on channel 6, however their signal strength is only 10 - 15% so they are quite a bit away. I'm currently on channel 4 and have tried a few other channels (8, 12 etc) but still had the problem.

The house phone is wired.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that it doesn't just happen on my USB adapter, it also happens on my laptop too at the same time so doesn't appear to be an issue with the USB adapter.

What FW version is currently loaded?
What HW version is this router?
Have you done a factory reset of the router and set up WiFi again?
Try using DHCP Reserved IP addresses for your devices on the router. Ensure devices are set for Auto Obtain addressing.
Is the primary and 2ndary DNS addresses filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual?
I would disable Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Enable DNS relay under Setup/Networking.
Try turning off uPnP under Advanced/Networking.

Would it happen to happen around 8PM and 8AM? Seems they have some traffic management that kicks in around then that could be messing something up. Just throwing it out there and seeing if it sticks

The FW version is 1.00VG dated 5th May 2009. I did the auto update search that you can do in the admin settings and it told me that this was the most up to date FW version.
The primary and secondary DNS addresses are not filled in, how would I find these out? The MTU is set to 1500.
I'll turn off uPnP and see if I can find DNS relay.

Most times the update feature does not work well. It's best to to directly to the web site and Download FW files there. However lets make sure the router is working better if we can get it going before updating.
You can find DNS ip addressing under Status/Device Info/Wan section. Can copy and paste these addresses.

The auto update in my DIR-615 C1 assured me it was up to date too, even though it was not.  

The D-Link site and be a little confusing when looking for the appropriate firmware revision.

Choose your country, then your HW revision, and click on Firmware.

Look through the release notes for your HW rev. to see if you're chasing something already addressed.
