HD spin up when pc wakes from standby

Hi,

I set my dns-320 to hibernate hard disks after 5 min, for me it's just fine.

The problem is the following:  when my desktop pc (win7 pro) resumes from standby then also the nas wakes up and hard disks start to spin.

With my notebook (win7) instead it's ok, when wakes up, the nas remain in standby state until I'll access data on the nas.

Does your desktop have drive maps to the NAS? If so, that is the likely cause.

One thing you might try is to use a network monitor and check out what communications is going to NAS direction.

I think this is normal behavior. Besides drive mapping there are many other possible causes such as libraries pointing to folders in the nas, nas volumes being listed (not as map drives) under "Computer" etc etc.

To be honest I am a bit sick of this kind of anxiety. NAS is not a floppy disk that spins only when inserted into the drive. NAS is a network device ALWAYS active on your LAN unless you unplug the cables.

I'd like to have it sleeping unless I require it. I use it only for backups at certain point of the day and have no use of it whatsoever during rest of the day.
So, spinning up and down headless is counterproductive and shortens the disk's life. Not to mention the noise.

If so, unplug it. Your backup is much much safer, too.
