Ive been looking into NAS to replace my server computer for the purpose of file storage (mainly) and it doesn't hurt that this will also do Print Server. I don't typically do heavy transfers once all the data is in place, so this will be a storage/streaming box. But i do have a few questions.

1. I saw on the HDD support list, the Samsung F1 drive, but has anyone been able to use the F3 drives with this? (im looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152238 in particular

2. Ive read a thing or two about security problems. Basically, i would like to be able to lock (read password protect) some folders on the NAS. Is this possible with this unit?

3. I realize the drive should be in the NAS for the format, but is it possible to remove the drive, and install it in a computer after the format for the data transfer (to speed up the data copy)?

1) As far as I know currently the DNS-323 supports a maximum of a 2 Gig drive so this one will not work.
2) Yes you can setup shares that either block users completely, or read/only.  Please note though once you do this you can't have anonymous access to other folders.
3) It possible to remove the drive(s) and put them in a PC to transfer the data provided you are not using raid, and that the PC can read the file system which is ext2 or ext3.  For a Window machine I hear there are drivers out there that will do this, but I have not used them.

You mean to other folders where i have not touched the security on?  Like if i password protect Folder A, nobody can anonymously access Folder B?

The Samsung 1TB F1 will work (no idea what the person above was talking about).

Also, is the 2 TB limit regarding per drive or total? (can it take 2x2TB drives)

Without a "hack", you cannot mix secured and anonymous samba security. As soon as you protect a share, any anonymous shares will require a login as well. If you don't need security, then you can leave it wide open.

With a modification, you can manually edit the samba configuration to allow both anonymous and secured shares, but this is not part of the default adminstration setup.

Well, i only really need to protect 1 or two folders of the entire drive. It doesn't really bother me much that the entire drive would require log in, except it sounds like it would make it difficult for media devices to connect and get streams from it. (such as xbox 360 or a blu-ray player with networking) Im not sure if these devices support security measures like this.

Those devices are not affected. Media Streaming does not currently institute any forms of password security unless you are accessing it over a samba share.

You mean the streaming service though the device itself? I was just refering to the media devices browsing to the files directly.. I forgot the nas had a stream built in. heh. Can you stream any file type? Or is it restricted?

File types are limited based on the type of service you are using. If you were using samba to stream to a client/device that is only limited by whatever the device can play. If you are using a service such as the DLNA certified media server or the iTunes server, there is more strict requirements on what can be played/streamed.

Most media players support authentication if you are accessing the media via a network/samba share.

I guess D-link has the new model out now in the 325. Wonder how improved it is over the 323.. Visually i see its now lockable (with a kensington type lock)

Nah they worked great in it (with the v1.10 beta firmware). I took them out as they are now in my server as I gave my DNS-323 away to a family member (who put the the 1.5TB F2 in it). The 2TB limit is per drive, I had my two F4 2TB's in no problem, giving a total of 4TB.
