Back Up Issues
« on: May 10, 2011, 02:50:04 AM »

Wow, a DNS 320 form finally!

I am having difficulty with back ups to my DNS 320.

So far the Farstone Recovery software is useless.  It allows me to select the NAS but after I put in the user ID and password it says it cannot access the location.  I can access it fine over Windows 7 and have written and modified files and folder successfully.

I have also tried the native Windows 7 back up facility.  It reports several errors but the most frequent is that it cannot find the correct path.  If you look however, files are written and a back up is there.  This is better than the Farstone software which never even gets out the gate.

I did buy this NAS to provide back up for all PCs in my home (2 Win 7 Pro 64 bit units and 1 XP Pro unit). The XP unit backs up with no issues at all.  Farstone insisted I ditch "HomeGroup" and put everything on "WorkGroup".  I have done this but there has been no change.

It would be nice if I could get the included Farstone back up to work...but since you have to pay extra to put the software on more than 1 PC, its of limited appeal to me.  If I can at least get the native Windows 7 back up to work, that would help.  I was hoping to use FarStone on my main PC to back up the family pictures and stuff which would then allow me to still use the Windows 7 native back up to the old USB drive I was using before for extra insurance.

Any ideas?

No replies and still no luck on my end.  I cannot get the Farstone Total Recovery Pro to write anything to the DNS320.  I can write and access through any other means.  I've take the network down and built it back up and Farstone is the only stick in the mud.  The Firewall bends over for it enough that it wants to charge it $10 a pass.  As far as I'm concerned its broken Bloatware that adds no value at all to the product and best left without.

I might just keep my USB back up drives and manually back up family photos and videos to the DNS 320 until such time that the penny drops and it all starts to work.  This is not what I shelled out the $$$ for the product to do, but I guess I will have to make do.  It was cheaper than a DROBO...maybe that why they charge so much for those.  Come to think of it, if backing up on the DNS320  is this hard, recovery must be an absolute pain in the ***.  Even if it takes more time I'll use the DNS320 to back up the things I care about on RAID 1 and muddle through the rest.  Thank goodness hard drives are cheap these days.

Now if only D-Link would open up a forum on their PowerLine products...I could then go on about my other woes (well, just one, but its really annoying).  :P

The fact that you can backup your win XP machine shows the problem is not with DNS320 but with win7 and its security setup.

As I don't have win7 here (only one copy of XP on a virtual machine) I can't help you but having read of others having problems with win7 and its security I would suggest you look there for the answer.
