2nd Drive Install - Quick Refresher.
« on: May 31, 2011, 11:18:39 AM »

So its been a while since I had to do anything with my DNS-323 it works great on my mac and pc. I've had it for about a year and half running a single 1.5tb drive.

I've just ordered a 2tb drive for it now.

I'm a bit rusty as its been a while since I had to do anything with my DNS. I'm just wondering what procedure I have to take to install the new drive.

Do I just have to stick it in or do I have to do some sort of formatting to the drive.

I'd like to use the new 2tb drive as my primary drive now and my current 1.5tb drive for storage/backup, should I be swapping the bay the current drive is in?

Thanks

You need to power down the DNS-323, insert your new HDD, and restart the unit.  the DNS-323 should prompt you to format the new HDD. Since you already have a drive in slot 1 (of a different size) you should format as a "Standard Volume".

There is no need to move your existing HDD from slot 1 to slot 2. Using the on-board software you can schedule a backup between the two HDDs (from slot 2 to slot 1 or visa versa).

You may consider removing your existing drive before formatting your new drive. (Sometimes issues come up when formatting). It shouldn't matter but better safe than sorry unless you have a backup.

If your new 2TB drive is AFT, then there are some other posts you should read. May not matter now, but may be important to you down the road.
