DIR-655, Outlook will not open over VPN
« on: September 04, 2010, 05:47:30 PM »

just upgraded from a Netgear 'G" router to the DIR-655, love the features of the 655 including the USB port. This is the issue, when I connect VPN to my job, I can see all of my files, databases, spread sheets, etc and use them no problem at all. Have a 25 meg connection via Comcast.
I can not open my outlook 2003the program opens, however it just sits at trying to connect and then time out. Have tried for 10 days now with no luck. Lan team at job state that "N" routers are blocking traffic and ports that outlook needs, 5 other users have this problem at work.
Have read many posts on Google but none seem to help.
Any guidance would be most greatly appreciated as I have had many sleepless nights tying to figure this out.
Other than this issue the router is great. Running the latest firmware for the router as well
thank you so much

Hi chungchu,

Three options:

1. - Download the file and use Outlook on your computer.

2. - Install LogMeIn on the computer at work and login through LogMeIn from your Home Computer.

3. - Open the ports on the Work Computer as well as your Home Computer for Outlook.

Please describe the way you're connecting to 'Outlook', since it does not show from your description. Are you running an Exchange server, trying to load the PST from your home (don't do this, the PST is probably too big), using Remote desktop.....?

Also check the client side, your PC at home may be in hibernate?

All,

Thank you so much, I already use logemin and have no probelm that way, also use webmail with no isues, The PSt is on the server at work, the issue seems tio be taht the DIR-655 is blocking by default a poer or ports that the client of outlook requires.

just had that issue with my wifes laptop and an HP J4680, I use it via USB she hits it wireless. I had to open port 427-UDP to get the HP to be on line and work, just seems taht all of the "N" routers are blocking common ports by default that the "G' routers do not.
Idid a test and swapped back my Netgear G router, (WGR614v3), the outlook problem over VPN connection went away, connected and disconnected 25 times no issues, sapped the DIR-655 back in, can not open outlook over vpn. Does anyomne know what ports outlook uses?
D-Link tech support sent me some docs about this probelm and have researched it for a bit and it seems to be a huge issues for folks that are upgrading to an N router.
I really like the way ooutlook feels over vpn as oposed to logmein where i am having to use my work machine-slower than my home set up.

any help is great. thank you all very much

Try with Advanced DSN disabled. It block VPN in some case.

Setup VPN under: Virtual Server under Advanced PPTP port 1723 and both tcp/udp your ip 192.168.1.?
Then you have GRE protocol 47 enabled aswell. Apply under Firewall Settings PPTP

Hi chungchu,

Suggestion: Reinstall the NetGear Router. Turn on the logs for the NetGear Router. Lock down the NetGear Router by using its Firewall that is built in.

Attempt to use Outlook again, normally. When it fails, looks at NetGear's log and see what is happening. What ports is Outlook using? Make a note and reinstall the D-Link Router and try again, armed with the ports that Outlook needs.

Perhaps this trouble of outlook files. I use ms outlook very often and some times I had like troubles. But I'm sure that the next software would settle this problem. I found out it at a soft blog and the tool has some interesting features which are suitable for solving out outlook issues - ost to pst converter.

Go to Advance- firewall settings and play with UDP and TCP endpoint filtering settings and SPI. Try different combinations, make sure you reboot the router after each change. The other option is to go to Inbound filter or Access Control and set the IP address of your office VPN as allowed.

Hi zlatan24,

What version of Outlook are you running? 32-Bit or 64-Bit? What operating system on both ends of the connection?
