I have a DNS-323 configured as a 1TB RAID-1 which has performed flawlessly for over a year.
Today the left hand drive indicator light is solid reddish, which I assume indicates a hard drive failure.
The user manual does not contain information for replacing a failed hard drive.
Is there a detailed procedure or do I just power down, insert a new drive and the unit does the rest (format and copy the data)?

Which firmware version are you running? I dont' remember which version we added auto-rebuild off the top of my head but if you are running Raid-1 and you insert a new drive, it should ask you to format and resync upon next login.

Firmware is V1.06.

Auto-Rebuild was added in 1.06 however I do not know if you enabled this feature during setup. If you insert a new drive into the unit in the side that has failed and reboot the unit (or do it when it is off and turn it on), login to the interface and if it doesn't ask you to rebuild the raid then it is already doing it (can be confirmed from the status page). If not it should give you an option to manually rebuild.

OK Thanks. I configured it as a RAID-1. Chances are I set to automatically format and re-stripe if that was an available option.

Now for a more basic question: Do the two drives in the RAID-1 need to be the same size?
My thought is to upgrade to a 2TB RAID-1. If I install a 2TB drive as a replacement for the 1TB drive that failed, will the process still work?

You should be able to have a Volume_1 raid1 partition and use the remaining space for a JBOD. I would suggest upgrading your firmware though atleast to 1.08 because of the amount of changes to the device since then.
