Weird problem with wired XBOX connection.
« on: June 25, 2011, 10:47:01 PM »

Ok, this baffles me:
When I first turn on my 360 it says it is not connected.  I try and connect and it says it cant and prompts me to "Test Connection" Now the weird part, when I try to test the connection, it takes me to the "available neworks" page and when I select "wired network" it tells me "To use a wired internet connection, make sure an ethernet cable is connected to both your console and your router or modem"  It is connected.  To make things even weirder, If I just go and play a game or watch a DVD offline after about 30 minutes or more I'll come back to the dashboard and magically I'm connected.  This only started happening recently, when I first hooked it up it worked fine.  I dont have wireless capability on my xbox at the moment so cant go that route.  My wireless is working fine for the most part.  I changed all the settings to the ones suggested on here by furry in the sticky " Gaming and GameFuel Setup Information - XBox Live" and still nothing happens.  I am running the 1.21NA firmware and havn't had a chance to DL the newest one yet.  But for some reason I dont think that is the problem.  As I stated, this problem was not occurring at first, but now happens every I turn on the 360.

What ISP service do you have? DSL or Cable?
What ISP modem do you have? Stand alone or does it have a built in router by chance?

Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices.
Ensure devices are set up for auto obtain IP addressing.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled.

I'm running the motorola surfboard (no built in router) with charter cable 20M service. I think I may have found the problem.  I gotta reset my router but I'll let you know if it fixes it.  The router auto-detected the IP address as ending in .197 and when I checked the xbox itself when it finally got online (magically connected while watching a movie) it said it was .199

If it dosn't work, which menu headings do I look for the changes you suggested?

ok, so I reset the modem to factory defaults and that seemed to work to get a regular reliable connection but now im afraid of changing anything.  I'll try and setup the router according to the xbox setup post you put up on sticky because my step son will be back with his slim 360 N band soon and I'm sure he'll want to use N if he can..

OK,
Setup Reserved (Static) IP addresses on the router for your devices under Basic/Networking.
Ensure devices are set up for auto obtain IP addressing. Don't input a IP address on the devices.
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Ensure Advanced DNS Service is disabled if you have this option.
Ensure DNS Relay is enabled under Basic/Networking.
If your going to game on WiFi, I recommend using single mode G or N for gaming to get best and highest thruput. WPA2 and AES.

Let us know how it goes.

Are you talking about adding the xbox in the DHCP reservation list?
I dont see anywhere the DNS IP address could be filled in unless your talking about "DYNAMIC IP (DHCP) INTERNET CONNECTION TYPE :" in which case I just filled it in, they were all 0"s
Advanced DNS is not enabled
DNS relay IS enabled
The 360 is setup for auto obtain IP
I am using a wired connection.

It was OK after I did a restore factory defaults for one day, then when I turned it on again today it was back to its old tricks.  It's the oddest thing, when I turn the xbox on it wont connect or recognize that it is plugged up to ethernet  at all.  It acts like the ethernet cable is unplugged.   Then we will watch a movie and after the movie is over when I hit the guide button it says I'm not connected to live, but when I exit out of the movie back to the dashboard it connects just fine.  Also I have to watch a good bit of the movie or play a game for a while before it will connect, if I just put in a movie for a few minutes and try and exit back out it will not connect.
I'm about to save changes and reset the router now...  hope it works, but I have a feeling it wont.

nope, its back to thinking the ethernet cable is not connected.

EDIT:
whoops spoke too soon, it popped back up seems to fix it for the moment, but I'll know for sure tomorrow as it seems like when i think i got it fixed 24 hrs later its back to its old tricks.

Yes, the xbox needs to be added to the DHCP reservation this. Add all of your devices. Primary and 2ndary DNS should be filled with something other than 0's. You can find DNS addressing under Status/Device Info/WAN section.

Then follow the gamefuel sticky for XBL.
